Job summary
Flitwick Surgery
is a busy practice looking for a reliable, experienced Healthcare Assistant to
join the Nursing Team on a part time permanent basis.
The successful
candidate will be able to work in a fast-moving environment and enjoy regular
patient contact.
They will be able
to deliver excellent patient care, positively representing the practice and
strengthening the relationship between patients and the surgery.
They need good
communications and clinical skills, to be able to manage their workload and
have a good understanding of the HCA role.
Main duties of the job
Phlebotomy and
sample management;
Wound management,
dressing and suture removal,
Taking clinical
measurements such as blood pressure, foot checks and other physiological
readings,
Performing ECGs
and taking Peak flow readings and Spirometry/Feno (if qualified and training will provided if
not);
Supporting long
term condition management by performing diabetic health checks to include foot
checks and for respiratory conditions takings peak flow, Spirometry and Feno
(training will be provided if required);
Health promotion
and checks would form part of the role with the post holder providing support
and encouragement to help patients self-manage their health and conditions;
Administer the
influenza, covid and pneumococcal vaccine under supervision.
Administer B12
injections.
Perform ear
irrigation;
Monitor
nursing and practice clinical stocks and support in the ordering of nursing
supplies;
Undertake and maintain records of cold
chain checks and other monitoring checks as required.

Flitwick is a
busy surgery serving a practice population of 14,250 patients. Run as a partnership
the clinical team consists of GPs, ANPs/minor illness nurses, a Paramedic,
Pharmacists, Practice Nurses, and HCAs. We are also a training practice for GPs
and also take part in medical research. We
also are part of a PCN Green Vale Health. As a commuter town in rural Bedfordshire, the
practice population is diverse, seeing patients of all life stages. We have
good links to the A6,M1 and parking for staff.

Undertake,
record and follow guidelines for the tasks for which you have received
appropriate training;

Urinalysis
and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory;

Undertake
Phlebotomy
-
Measuring
and recording following physiological measurements in routine presentations:
- 1.
blood
pressure

pulse
rate and rhythm

ECG

flow readings
- 8.

Prepare
and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions.

Chaperone
other clinicians;

Assist
regulated professional for patients undergoing minor surgery or LARC clinics;

Assist
in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted
including carrying out registration medicals, NHS health checks, carers health
checks and learning disability health checks;

Give
accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own
competence.

Support
long term condition management by clinical checks for example for COPD and
Asthma by undertaking spirometry and Feno tests or for Diabetes by undertaking
pre review health checks such as bloods, BP, health information gathering on
diet and foot checks:

Undertake
simple wound care management, suture removal and dressing procedures following
local recommendations and using aseptic techniques.

Where
appropriate, provide support and encouragement to self-manage their conditions;
-
Have
a basic understanding of long-term conditions including diagnostic
interventions, treatments, and the principles of care and self management;
-
Plan,
develop and implement health promotion activities as appropriate e.g. exercise
and diet;
-
Smoking
cessation (qualification required);
-
Assess
patients readiness to change and provide motivational support as appropriate in
cases of smoking, obesity and healthy living for older people;
-
After
appropriate training, administer the influenza, covid and pneumococcal vaccine
under indirect supervision of a regulated professional; and
-
To gain the underpinning knowledge and
practical skills to administer basic life support or adrenaline if necessary.
