This is an exciting opportunity for a Health Care Assistant to be trained to assist our consultant Ophthalmologists undertake various services such as cataract surgery and treatment for other eye conditions.
The role involves weekends working, but there is enhanced pay for this.
Full training will be provided.
Main duties of the job
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Check all patient paperwork is in
order for the day according to the appointments running list.
- Identify patient by asking
patient to identify him/herself and by checking against medical notes.
- Obtain and record patient consent.
- Inform patients about the
procedure, why they are having it and what will happen next.
- Assisting in the assessment and
surveillance of patients health and well-being on admission.
- Ensure the patient is suitable for surgery
- Performs relevant observations to
establish baselines prior to surgery (HCA Level).
- Assist in the identification of
risk and work towards minimising these risks.
- Undertake the biometry test as
delegated by the ophthalmologist and as instructed.
- Ensure all relevant information
is entered onto the clinical system prior to surgery.
- Prepare patient for surgery using
eye dressing pack and dress with theatre cap.
- Administer any eye drops under
Patient Group Directive as instructed by surgeon.
- Assist in closing down the
clinic, putting away all equipment securely, cleaning down the room, tidying
and locking up.
About us
Folkestone Eye Centre is an NHS community-based outpatient clinic, brings expert eye care closer to patient's homes.
The service is a joint venture owned and run by the partnership of Newton Place Surgery and a group of local expert Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons.
The service is located at our newly renovated premises within Basepoint in Folkestone. We have the most up to date diagnostic and surgical equipment on site, including a state-of-the-art cataract surgery suite.
Treatment offered within our service includes cataract surgery, general ophthalmology, wet AMD, minor eye conditions, oculoplastic surgery, cornea service and minor surgery.
The service commenced in March and at present there is a small friendly team in place. We are expecting the service to grow as it becomes established.
The position includes weekend working as this is when most of the clinical services take place. There is an enahnced rate for this.

- Identify patient by asking
patient to identify him/herself and by checking against medical notes.
- Assisting in the assessment and
surveillance of patients health and well-being on admission.
- Supply patient with identity
label.
- Ensure the patient is a suitable
for the surgery? I.e. do they have someone to take them home?
- Performs relevant observations to
establish baselines prior to surgery (HCA Level).
- Ensure all relevant information
is entered onto the clinical system prior to surgery.
- Prepare patient for surgery using
eye dressing pack and dress with theatre cap.
- Administer any eye drops under
Patient Group Directive as instructed by surgeon.
- Mark site for surgery.
- Hand over patient to circulation
nurse when ready or theatre.
- Preparing and maintaining
environments and equipment before, during after the patient care interventions.
- Some time in front of a computer where high degrees of
concentration are required and the ability to cope with interruptions.
Pre- Assessment
Clinic Duties and Responsibilities:
- Sign in on the clipboard at
reception and collect any relevant messages for the day.
- Change into scrubs and
pre-assessment room, including Lenstar machine.
- Log into Eye Clinic software on
the computer-Clinical and patient list.
- Ensure patients details are
loaded on Lenstar and tally with the appointments in the Eye software.
- Check all patient paperwork is in
order for the day according to the appointments running list.
- Take set of notes from the pile
ensuring it tallies with the first/next appointment on the screen and collect
patients from the waiting area.
- Introduce self to patients on
arrival to consulting room.
- Check patient details and record
up to date information.
- Take consent from the patient for
the clinic and record this in the software.
- Inform patients about the
procedure, why they are having it and what will happen next.
- Undertake the biometry test as
delegated by the ophthalmologist and as instructed.
- Perform Verion if required.
- Have the ability to realise that
the patient is in distress or dissatisfied and refer to the ophthalmologist if
necessary.
- Report any untoward incidents to
the ophthalmologist.
- Assist patients only when safe to
do so without causing harm or injury to yourself or the patient according to
practice polices on manual handling.
- Take immediate advice from the
ophthalmologist in any circumstance(s) that appear unusual or unexpected.
- Assist in the identification of
risk and work towards minimising these risks.
- Provide the patients results for
the ophthalmologist- print from Lenstar.
- Mark patient seen in the Eye
Clinic software, collate the paperwork and handover to the ophthalmologist for
assessments.
- Assist in closing down the
clinic, putting away all equipment securely, cleaning down the room, tidying
and locking up.
- Place the scrubs in the laundry
bag
- Attend all mandatory and service
training as required.
- Maintain a clean, tidy and safe
environment for patients and staff at all times.
