Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit
a General Practice Assistant (GPA) within the Rockingham Forest Primary Care
Network (RFPCN).
General Practice Assistant is an exciting new role introduced to
provide extra time, capacity and expertise to support patients in preparing
for, or in following-up, clinical conversations they have with clinicians. Working
closely with the GPs and other healthcare professionals across the PCN; the
post holder will support with undertaking basic clinical observations,
supporting wound and/or immunisation care and liaising with outside agencies
enabling clinicians to continue with consultations. The post also requires completion
of administration tasks for clinicians, such as coding patient records and
completing non-opinion forms on behalf of the health professionals for
review, and implementing and reviewing patient care plans.
The successful candidates must be available to work on a full-time basis with flexibility when required to work across the other sites within the PCN.
Main duties of the job

Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP,
taking a brief history and basic clinical readings in readiness for the GP
appointment

Preparing, testing and reporting on patient samples

Helping
the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g. getting an on call doctor on the phone
to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their
consultation(s)

Primary Care Networks (PCN) are a group of local General Practice surgeries working in collaboration with one another to provide services to its local communities and patient groups. Lakeside Healthcare is responsible for 4 PCNs across 3 Localities and providing services to approximately 200,000 patients across these networks.
The post holder will support the support smooth running of clinics by performing routine tasks, both clinical and administrative, on behalf of the GPs and other health practitioners within the surgery.
DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Key Responsibilities
- To work in a patient-centered and holistic way, promoting an individuals well-being.
- Preparing patients prior to them seeing the GP or senior AHP; taking brief history and basic clinical readings.
- Prepare for, obtain, test and report on, various patient samples.
- Explaining treatment procedures to patients
- Support implementation, monitoring and review of patient care plans.
- Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for GPs to approve and sign e.g., Insurance, Mortgage, Benefit Agency forms etc.
- Liaise with outside agencies e.g., to ask for advice or arrange an admission, allowing the GP/AHP to continue their medical consultation
- Support the GP/Health Practitioners with immunisation/wound care
- Arranging appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up for patients
- Sort clinical correspondence and prioritising for the GP/AHP in terms of actions
- Signpost any additional actions to other suitable clinical services; internal and external.
- Extraction of coding requirements from clinical letters and adding to notes
- Working with clinical lead(s) on quality audits to support accurate coding of the patient record.
Communications and Key Working Relationships
- Participate and be an active member of the clinical team.
- Communicate effectively with outside agencies with confidence and sharing appropriate, relevant information to support patient care
- Liaise, communicate effectively, and collaborate with the patient services team to ensure smooth running and transition of care.
- Communicate effectively and clearly with patients, their families, and carers, recognising the need for alternative methods of communication
- Utilising administrative skills appropriately to converse with a range of stakeholders including through emails, telephone calls and systems.
Knowledge and Skills
- Post holder must hold a GP Assistant certificate qualification or be willing to work towards this
- An understanding of infection control measures; preparation of clinical environments
- Be aware of own professional boundaries and what to do when these are reached
- A good understanding of how to handle patient information and the importance of maintaining confidentiality
- Strong administrative skills and competencies to fulfil tasks requirements such as coding, form completion and auditing
- IT literate with confidence in using GP systems and Microsoft office packages such as word, excel and Outlook

- Be willing to undertake ad hoc travel to various locations to carry out duties of the post as required.
- To safeguard the health, well-being, and safety of the patients we work with, some of whom maybe classed as vulnerable people or adults at risk.
