Job summary
An opportunity has arisen to join our motivated, forward thinking practice based in the outskirts of Cambridge City.
We are looking for an enthusiastic practice nurse and are open to newly qualified applicants. This is a fixed term position of 25 hours per week for 12 months, with the potential for this becoming a permanent position with increased hours.
We are looking for someone who shares our commitment and passion to providing high quality patient care and who also has the desire to attain their own individual career goals.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe and effective nursing care to the whole practice population. Please see the job description for further details
About us
Firs House Surgery, Histon and it's branch surgery in Cottenham are a friendly family practice with a list size of 12,500 patients.
We have 5 GP Partners, 3 Salaried GP's, 2 GP Registrars, 2 ANP's, 3 Practice Nurses, 2 HCA's and a Phlebotomist.
We are part of Cambridge Northern Villages PCN.

Job responsibilities
- Clinical Responsibilities:
- To be responsible for diagnostic procedures – for example, venepuncture, blood pressure, height/weight, ECG and pathological specimens.
- To advise patients on general health care and promotion of healthy lifestyles.
- To manage patients with Chronic Disease, running specific clinics and maintaining call/recall systems.
- To be responsible for bandaging, dressings, foot care, ear examination, ear syringing, suture removal and first aid.
- To administer injections under an individualised prescription or PGD within training limits. Ensuring safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs.
- To administer immunisations – for example, influenza, pneumococcal, tetanus and childhood immunisations.
- To participate in national screening work such as cervical cytology.
- To provide directly and assist GPs with contraceptive services.
- To assist GPs with minor surgery as required.
- As part of a team, lead on infection control and prevention.
Core Duties:
- To work independently, as part of a busy Nursing Department, whilst also working flexibly as a member of the team to meet the needs of patients and service delivery.
- To be an active and integral member of the Nursing Team, attending team meetings and training sessions, supporting colleagues and working flexibly to cover annual leave or sickness
- To act as chaperone if required/requested by patients and colleagues.
- To work alongside HCAs and Student Nurses to develop their skills and offer mentorship, guidance and support to improve standards of care if needed.
- To assist in maintaining a safe environment for the nursing team, patients and co-workers, ensuring that all statutory and local regulations (e.g. Health & Safety, COSHH, clinical waste management, infection control) are implemented and followed
- To ensure data is recorded accurately and timely onto patient records using EMIS and other IT software, with due regard for record management and patient confidentiality.
- To ensure data is accurately recorded and coded onto relevant templates and documentation associated with patient health care.
- To maintain and stock examination rooms and treatment rooms with agreed consumables and clinical equipment / instruments. • To collect data and participate in regular Practice audits and research projects.
- To be aware of quality standards and targets as set out in NICE guidelines, NHS contracts, Quality and Outcomes Framework, etc., working to achieve these standards at all times.
- To promote a professional approach at all times by attire and attitude to patients and staff both in and out of the Practice.
To maintain annual registration with the NMC and other professional bodies (as required). To adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct.
