Job summary

We are seeking to recruit someone who wishes to pursue an apprenticeship for an Occupational Therapy Degree. We would propose to employ the successful recruit in the role of Occupational Therapy Assistant whilst they study with a view to them becoming a fully fledged Occupational Therapist with a permanent contract upon completion of the degree course. We are a teaching PCN with a large and diverse workforce so if you wish to learn about primary care health disciplines whilst you study for a new qualification this could be the role for you. The successful recruit would work with our qualified and experienced Occupational Therapists, learning as they go. You would also have a very exciting opportunity to link in with our other clinical teams for a truly holistic and multi disciplinary work ethos. You will also have protected study time to engage with the course at Huddersfield University as needed. Work with us and we will help to develop, train and grow you!

Main duties of the job

You will work closely with our existing Occupational Therapists who will help to nurture and develop you. Some of the duties will include:

- Assist the First Contact Practitioner (FCP) Occupational Therapists to provide high quality therapy interventions to primary care patients who may be experiencing difficulties with activities of daily living because of physical or mental health symptoms.

- To deliver patient care, as directed by the team manager, understanding the range of clinical therapeutic interventions with limited/indirect supervision in patients homes and other community settings.

- Key areas of intervention are mental health anxiety and low mood management, frailty, and symptom management of long term conditions e.g. pain, fatigue.

- Carry a small caseload providing treatment plans/packages designed by the OT's. There will be ongoing support to monitor, review and evaluate progress, making alterations to treatment programmes as required.

- Lead group and individual treatment sessions. These may take place over the telephone, in the GP Surgery, community setting or within a patients home.

- Help manage the OT resources including assessment and treatment resources, equipment ordering /monitoring and to help with the setting up of equipment.

- Assist in promoting the OT service across the Primary Care Network (PCN).

1000 placement hours over the 3 years placements are mapped and planned by the University. For example, 1 5-week placement in 1st year, 2 6-week placements in 2nd year and 1 8-week placement in 3rd year

Also do 70-hour placement called widening Occupational Therapy in 3rd year looks at how an OT could work in and benefit an organisation that doesn't normally have OT's

University 1 day a week day to be determined either a Monday or Friday

Hybrid teaching method virtual or face to face depends on the module

7.5 hours off the job training per week

Variety of different types of assessment practical, written, oral etc.

Lots of support offered to the student by the University - each student will be allocated a personal tutor
