Job summary

Whitstable Medical Practice has a vacancy for an enthusiastic and self motivated Trainee Nurse Practitioner / Minor Illness, Injury Nurse to join their friendly team in our Urgent Treatment Centre.

We encourage applications from registered nurses with skills in Accident and Emergency or Minor Injuries Clinics. Practice Nurses who are willing to train to become an Emergency Nurse Practitioner are also welcome to apply.

We offer a competitive salary which will be dependent on experience. The NHS pension is also offered.

You will be expected to work Monday to Friday 8:00am - 8:00pm plus weekends and bank holidays. Weekly hours to be agreed with the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work within an integrated Practice team, and duties will include delegated patient care ans support to GPs, nursing and paramedic staff. Relevant experience in Minor illness and Minor Injury is desirable although a structured training programme will be offered.

The ideal candidate will have experience of using a medical software package, be accurate, have excellent communication and organisation skills, be flexible and a team player.

Job responsibilities

Job Summary:

The post holder is a nurse, who acting within their professional boundaries, will assist in the assessment of patients attending the UTC. The post holder will be or become a clinical expert working across traditional boundaries providing a comprehensive assessment of patients with undifferentiated or undiagnosed conditions. The nurse will see and treat the patients and provide a high standard of care and valuable healthy lifestyle information to promote good continued health. They will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary general practice team to meet the needs of patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures. A structured training programme will be offered within the UTC.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Clinical

  • After one to one training be able to conduct minor illness/injury consultations.
  • After 6 -12 months training be able to manage more complex illnesses and treat all minor illnesses/injuries. To be able to do this in 15-20 minutes appointments.
  • At 1 year to see patients independently. To diagnose and treat within the setting of the UTC facility providing a high standard of patient care using autonomous clinical skills and a broad and in-depth theoretical knowledge base
  • Under supervision instigate necessary invasive and non-invasive diagnostic tests or investigations and interpret findings/reports, eg x-ray
  • To provide clinical expertise to patients walking in to, or with an appointment in the UTC by assessing and treating their condition.
  • To provide clinical support to colleagues in the UTC.
  • To keep a log of experience gained, conditions seen and learning needs identified.
  • Provide safe, evidence-based, cost-effective, individualised patient care.
  • Under supervision offer a holistic service to patients and their families, developing where appropriate an on-going plan of care/support, with an emphasis on prevention and self-care.
  • Promote health and well-being through the use of health promotion, health education, screening and therapeutic communication skills.
  • Refer patients directly to other services/agencies as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the practice achieving its quality targets to sustain the high standards of patient care and service delivery.

Teaching and Mentoring Role

  • Promote a learning environment for patients, nurses and other health professionals.
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of the teaching for existing staff, such as medical students, NP students, GP Registrars and Health Care Assistants within the practice.

Professional Role

  • Promote evidence-based practice through the use of the latest research-based guidelines and the development of practice-based research.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of your own clinical practice through the quality assurance strategies such as the use of audit and peer review.
  • Maintain professional registration.
  • Participate in continuing professional development opportunities to ensure that up to date evidence-based knowledge and competence in all aspect of the role is maintained.
