Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for TWO full time Dispensary Assistants.

Our friendly, supportive dispensary team serves the small rural GP practice, Sellindge Surgery.

Experience is preferred but is not essential as in-house training will be given.

The hours of work will either be 8am until 6pm Tuesday to Friday OR 8am to 6pm Monday to Thursday.

Job Title: Dispensary Assistant

Reports to Practice Manager

Hours: Full time

Dispensary Duties:

  • Printing repeat prescriptions and re-authorising where necessary.

  • Deal with patient queries over the telephone and in person.

  • Liaise with the Doctors.

  • Follow all procedures/SOPS for dispensing of medications

  • Checking of medicines against the prescription which other persons have dispensed.

  • Printing of labels.

  • Ordering of stock.

  • Unpacking and labelling stock, checking against the order and delivery note. Return any unwanted stock.

  • Handing of prescriptions and medication to patients ensuring the back of the script is correctly completed.

  • Advise patients on drug administration.

  • Advise patients of prescription charges and accept and record payment.

  • Separate signed prescriptions into those, which are to go to external pharmacy and those, which are to be dispensed in the practice.

  • Assist external pharmacy with collection of prescriptions and any queries.

  • Cleaning and tidying of stock on the shelves, checking for any out of date stock.

  • Counting of prescriptions, categorise into groups for exemption etc. and to send to the NHSBSA on the second working day of the following month.

  • Complete a stock check on the last day of the financial year and submit to the Practice Manager in a timely manner.

  • Weekly Nomads.

  • Processing drum forms.

  • Dealing with owings and returns.

  • End of day banking.

  • All other Adhoc tasks.

Health & Safety

  • Ensure that all stock is put away promptly to minimise potential risk of harm to patients or staff.

  • Ensure that consideration is taken towards potential tripping hazards e.g. step stools, empty boxes etc.

  • Ensure that empty boxes/rubbish are disposed of and are not left in the dispensary area as a potential hazard.

  • Ensure that the dispensary area is generally clean and tidy, free of obstacles, e.g area around PC to be free of clutter.

  • Reduce the availability to drugs ensuring that where appropriate all access doors/windows and shutters are kept closed to ensure the safety of the dispensary staff.

  • Ensure that the fridge temperature is logged twice a day.

  • Ensure that the controlled drugs key is kept safe at all times.

  • Ensure patient, staff and Practice information is kept confidential and secure at all times, in accordance with the information Security and Confidentiality protocols.

Performance/Professional Development

  • To participate in training sessions to ensure administrative, clinical and computer skills are kept up to date with current technology and practice.

  • To participate in regular appraisal meetings.

  • To participate in regular team meetings.
