NURSE ASSOCIATE - JOB DESCRIPTION
POST: NURSE ASSOCIATE
RESPONSIBLE TO: PARTNERS OF THE PRACTICE
PURPOSE:
The overall purpose of this post is to provide comprehensive nursing services to the Patients of the Practice, in participation with the General Practitioners, or independently, according to agreed protocols. The post holder will work in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.
DUTIES INCLUDE:Administrative role own referrals, auditing, reporting and QoF
Anticoagulation Monitoring
Asthma care
Care and maintenance of equipment
Chronic Kidney Disease care
Coronary Heart Disease care
Depo-Provera Injections
Diabetic care
Ear examination and treatments
Enhanced Service provision as trained and competent to deliver
First Aid and management of emergencies
Awareness of Infection Control
NHS Health checks
Oral Contraceptive pill checks and HRT checks
Ordering of supplies and equipment
Participation in research/audit programmes
Participation on weekly Practice meetings
Seasonal and PHE advised vaccine clinics
Spirometry
Supporting HCA team
Travellers vaccinations
Venepuncture
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Be responsible for maintaining standards of care and for the continuing nursing care to the Patients of the Practice.
2.Participate in the assessment of population health needs, identification ofpriorities and health targets.
3.Assist in the development of health promotion programmes for the Practice population.
4. To be involved with existing clinics and evaluate nursing care for specific groups of Patients or those with specific conditions.
5. Develop and implement professional standards, protocols and clinical audit programmes.
6.Promote good practice in all aspects of care and conduct of nursing techniques, ensuring that nursing practice is evidence based.
7.Maintain accurate and timely Patient records and statistics, on paper and computer as appropriate.
8.Initiate and maintain good working relationships and communication with all statutory and voluntary organisations, hospitals, patients, carers and members of the Practice and Primary Health Care Team. Attend regular meetings within the Practice.
9.Ensure the cost-effective use of Practice resources.
10.Maintain clinical knowledge and identify training and professional development needs. Attend courses and study days as approved.
11.Maintain confidentiality at all times and display a courteous demeanour.
12.Any other duties as may be determined from time to time commensurate with the range of activities described above and be answerable to the GPs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Nurse Associate Qualification
The post holder must be in possession of a current NMC Personal Identification Number and be willing to become a member of a professional defence organisation
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND RECORD KEEPING
- To develop working competencies in the use of Information Technology
- To ensure the relevant information is recorded in the patients electronic record.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
To meet the duties placed on all employees by the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) i.e:
- To undertake reasonable care for Health and Safety of themselves and others that may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.
- To co-operate with their employer as far as necessary to meet the requirements of the legislation.
- Not to intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health and safety or welfare in pursuance of any of the relevant statutory provisions.
- To adhere to the requirements of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (C.O.S.H.H) (Amendment) Regulations 1991.
- To adhere to all policies relating to health and safety as determined by the practice.
- To attend all mandatory training, including the New Starter induction Programme.
DATA PROTECTION AND PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Users must make their nominated officer aware of any changes to their computerised system, software utilised and personal data that is processed disclosed.
- Be familiar with and comply with the General Data Protection Regulations, the Practices Policies on Data Protection, computer viruses and Data Security Policy.
- Comply with the Eight Data Protection Principles contained in the Act.
- The post holder will observe confidentiality of patients, general practitioners and employers business at all times.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Information regarding patients, doctors or members of staff must not be discussed in such a way that a third person may hear and understand what is being said. Such a breach may result in dismissal. Any information regarding patients must never be divulged to another person.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
To establish and maintain working relationships with: -
- Partners within the practice
- Practice Staff
- Primary Care Network team
- The Primary Health Care Team, including Health Visitors, District Nurses, Midwives etc.
- All associated Practice Staff ie. Therapists etc.
- All practice patients
- All visitors to the practice
- Colleagues at Leicester CCG and NHS England
GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS
1. All employees are subject to the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act. The post-holder is required to ensure, as an employee, that his/her work methods do not endanger other people or themselves
2. A review of all employees individual contribution and future requirements for training and development will be carried out on an annual basis. Throughout the year interim review dates will be set for progress to be discussed and monitored
3. All employees are subject to the requirements of the Data Protection Act, and must maintain strict confidentiality in respect of patients and staff records
4. The Practice delivers safeguarding services/practice to prevent and reduce the risk of abuse and neglect of children, young people and adults. Downing Drive Surgery aims to do this by ensuring compliance with statutory and local guidance for safeguarding. All employees have the responsibility to be aware of our safeguarding policy, local guidance and how to report concerns. This will be covered as part of the staff induction and then regular mandatory training thereafter.

This job description may be reviewed in the light of changed service needs and developments. Any changes will be fully discussed with the post-holder. The post-holder may be required to carry out other projects or duties relating to the grade of the post.
