Practice Manager / Trainee Practice Manager

Job summary

We are seeking an experienced Practice Manager or a motivated Trainee Practice Manager to work closely with the Business Manager in the day-to-day management and strategic development of the practice.

This is an excellent opportunity for an established manager or an aspiring manager looking to develop their career within general practice. A special interest and/or qualification in Human Resources is highly desirable, as the role includes significant responsibility for staff management and workforce development.

This would involve working on site 5 days a week

Main duties of the job

  • Support the Business Manager in the operational and strategic management of the practice

  • Oversee HR functions including recruitment, onboarding, staff contracts, appraisals, absence management, and performance processes

  • Ensure compliance with employment law, NHS regulations, and practice policies

  • Contribute to workforce planning, training, and staff wellbeing initiatives

  • Assist with practice policies, procedures, and governance

  • Manage or support the management of day-to-day practice operations

  • Liaise with external organisations including PCN, ICB, and other NHS bodies

  • Support service development and quality improvement initiatives

For trainee applicants, full training and support will be provided, with a structured development plan in place.

Job purpose

To support the Business Manager in the effective operational and strategic management of the GP practice, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and efficient services. The post holder will have a particular focus on Human Resources, including workforce management, staff development, and compliance with employment legislation.

This role is suitable for an experienced Practice Manager or a Trainee Practice Manager, with appropriate support, supervision, and training provided depending on experience.

Key responsibilitiesManagement and leadership
  • Support the Business Manager in the overall management of the practice

  • Contribute to strategic planning and service development

  • Provide leadership and support to the administrative and non-clinical team

  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and professional working environment

Human Resources (HR)
  • Lead or support HR functions including recruitment, induction, contracts, appraisals, and performance management

  • Manage sickness absence, annual leave, and staff wellbeing in line with practice policies

  • Ensure compliance with employment law, NHS guidance, and HR best practice

  • Maintain accurate staff records and HR documentation

  • Support training, development, and workforce planning initiatives

Operational management
  • Oversee or support the day-to-day running of the practice

  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and effective rota management

  • Support the development, implementation, and review of practice policies and procedures

  • Assist in managing complaints, significant events, and incidents in line with practice policy

Governance and compliance
