We have a lot of experience in working with PAs and have been involved in training PAs from the start of the local training programmes. Pendle View recognise that PAs, with appropriate support, play a vital role in the management of patients in Primary Care.

Due to our continued growth, Pendle View Medical Centre is looking for an additional Physician Associate to be a part of our friendly and supportive training practice. If you are passionate about Primary Care come and join us as we build our Physician Associate Team.

Main duties of the job

Physician Associates will work within their scope of general practice and demonstrate safe clinical decision making and care for patients within the GP practice, in consultation with the supervising GP.

To be responsible for the provision of a clinical service, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population. The Physician Associate will be required to work autonomously in the practice, providing a range of services such as assessment, diagnosis, treatment, telephone triage, clinical decision-making and referring patients appropriately, as well as supporting the management team in the reviewing of clinical policy and procedure when required.

We are open to the prospect of an experienced PA or a newly qualified PA and recognise the value of this role in general practice.

About us

We are a medium sized practice in East Lancashire and currently employ PAs who are a valuable member of our team. PAs work with our clinical team to offer acute and chronic care to our patients. The majority of the appointments will be in practice but there may be a requirement for routine home visits.

As a practice we offer our PAs support and recognise this is a role which requires supervision which is offered by the nominated clinician each day. Our practice ethos is to encourage development of our staff and we support training of staff and are involved in several training schemes.

We are open to employing an experienced or newly qualified PA.

The following job description should be read in conjunction with the Person Specification for this post.

The post holder will work collaboratively with other members of the Primary Care Team within the policies and procedures of Pendle View Medical Practice, and will have the following duties and responsibilities under the broad headings below:

1. CLINICAL

Participate in all treatment and preventative healthcare services in the Practice as delegated and agreed by the supervising doctor

Provide direct clinical care to patients using established clinical guidelines.

Interview patients, take medical histories, perform physical examinations, analyse, diagnose and explain medical problems during surgery consultations and home visits.

Recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment.

Request and interpret results of laboratory investigations when necessary.

Consult and refer patients to physicians, medical specialists and other health professionals as appropriate; in primary and secondary care or in the community.

Instruct and educate patients in all matters relating to their physical and mental health. This may include medication, diet, social habits, contraception, lifestyle and preventative health care.

Conduct telephone consultations which may involve discussing the results and implications of laboratory investigations with patients as well as dealing appropriately with routine and emergency complaints.

Fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes.

Work with a supervising physician to visit, assess and provide care for residents of nursing homes linked to the Practice.

Where necessary carry our home visits to review pre-assessed patients

Contribute to the clinical development of the practice by developing a special interest and to help establish appropriate systems to manage common chronic medical conditions, ensuring compliance with current accepted national guidelines. This would include carrying out audits and contributing to the development of practice polices.

Undertake other activities when needed that are within the post holders clinical competence and which would not otherwise jeopardise the delivery of primary medical services to patients

2. TRAINING / EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Keep up to date with relevant medical research and evidence-based medical practice by attending continuing education courses and professional meetings, reading journals etc.

Perform a variety of research and analysis tasks associated with improvement of clinical care, medical diagnosis and treatment where appropriate using the following means. Audit of clinical practice or service improvement projects.

Review of relevant literature.

Research unusual symptoms and treatment options through consultation with General Practitioners, Physicians and other specialists.

Assist in clinical instruction and supervision of medical and nursing students as well other learners that may periodically be attached to the practice, including the educational development and mentoring of UK-trained Physician Associates.

Attend regular multi-disciplinary meetings organised by the Practice in order to discuss and learn from recent significant events relating to clinical practice occurring within the Practice.

Attend regular educational meetings organised by the practice in order to update clinical knowledge, practice policy and guidelines and disseminate other useful information relevant to the provision of adequate healthcare for patients.

Regularly reflect on own practice (and keep a record of learning encounters) in order to identify learning needs and encourage self-directed lifelong learning and continued professional development.

In conjunction with mentor agree on areas for development. The practice supports study leave for mutuallyagreedevents

3. ADMINISTRATION
