Job summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated and committed person to join our nursing team as a Practice Nurse. This is a part time position and the successful candidate will be a qualified nurse with strong interpersonal skills. Previous experience of working in a treatment room is preferred but not essential. Training will be offered to the appropriate candidate. Salary is negotiable depending on that experience.

Main duties of the job

You will assist medical personnel in the care of practice patients to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education. Please see the attached job description for full details.

Job description

Job responsibilities

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. TO PROVIDE ASSESSMENT, SCREENING, TREATMENT SERVICES AND HEALTH EDUCATION ADVICE.

i. Provide routine nursing treatments and health education, to all patients in participation with general practitioners or independently to agreed protocols. Recognise health promotion opportunities and offer advice where able.

ii. Undertake assessment of patients with a range of differing wounds, working within sphere of competence or refer to other services as required

iii. Administer medications in accordance with local PGDs, ensure to keep updated. This may include contraceptive injections, vitamin B12 and depo neuroleptic injections, recognising side effects and contraindications.

iv. Extended roles to include complex dressings, ear irrigation and baby immunisations to agreed protocols.

ii. Provide ECG screenings to practice patients (within agreed protocols) with reference to general practitioners as necessary

iii. Advise patients on general health care and minor ailments with referral to general practitioners as necessary.

iv. Assist GPs with minor surgery and provide chaperoning and assistance as requested during patient examinations.

v. Carry out routine NHS Health Checks, offering advice on all areas of health.

vi. Offer pre-travel advice and support to patients, administering vaccinations where required in accordance with local PGDs.

vii. Sexual Health

2. TREATMENT ROOM SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT.

i. Ensure the maintenance of equipment and stock levels relating to patient care.

ii. Ensure all Health and Safety requirements and Infection Control measures are met and report any problems to the Nurse Manager.

3. PATHOLOGICAL SPECIMENS AND INVESTIGATORY PROCEDURES.

Undertake the collection of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs, urine collect etc. Perform any investigatory procedures requested by the general practitioners.

Take samples for the cervical screening programme according to recognised standards.

4. ADMINISTRATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES.

Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team.

i. Ensure complete and accurate records of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients computerised medical records.

ii. Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation and records associated with patient health care and registration with the practice.

iii. Attend and participate in practice meetings as required.

5. EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF STUDENTS AND PRACTICE STAFF.

Participate in the education and training of students of all disciplines and the induction of all members of practice staff.

6. LIAISON.

Maintain effective liaison with other agencies and staff concerned with patient care and with all other disciplines within the practice, with appropriate regard to confidentiality.

7. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

i. Maintain continued education by attendance at courses and study days as deemed useful or necessary for professional development.

ii. Maintain a written professional development plan and maintain an up to date portfolio which meets the requirements of registration with the NMC.

iii. Ensure to revalidate in timely manner.

iv. Attend annual appraisal and participate in clinical supervision.
