Job summary

Your primary base will be either Willowbrook or Kibworth Medical Centre. A rotation will be included with University Hospitals Leicester and General Practice (GP) for 6 month rotations of each year. We are advertising for 4 vacancies, 2 based at each site

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain an extensive understanding of Pharmacy in two workplaces. You will gain practical experience whilst working under the supervision of a Pharmacist.

  • You will have 1 day per week study for the two-year training programme.
  • You will require FOUR GCSE passes see JD for full details
  • You will be required to complete the new qualification for trainee Pharmacy Technicians: BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles & Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.

Interviews are due to take place on 11/1/21 and 12/1/21.

Successful candidated should be able to commence posts from 1-20/2/21

Main duties of the job

The post holder will develop knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles & Practice for Pharmacy Technicians through a structured rotational training program in order to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Pharmacy Technician under the support and guidance of Pharmacy and Practice staff.

The postholder will complete competencies in the workplace to achieve the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles & Practice for Pharmacy Technicians and will complete the learning organised by the training provider using all the allocated weekly study day and study in personal time.

The postholder will ensure knowledge, attitudes and behavior follow the General Pharmaceutical Councils Standards for Pharmacy Professionals during the two-year training programme in order that they can seek a declaration of competence from supervising pharmacists in all sectors.

KEY RESULT AREAS

Dispensary work area duties

1. To dispense prescriptions in accordance with professional and ethical standards laid down by

the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

2. To assist in stock management including date checking; recalls and alerts.

3. To serve customers according to their requirements and in line with pharmacy policies in

order to deliver high quality, exemplar customer service.

4. To issue medication to patients and counsel them on the correct and safe usage of their

medication so that patients feel well informed and able comply with their medication regimen by

the end of the training period.

5. To determine and compile ward stock lists in conjunction with ward sisters and pharmacists,

in order to carry out a topping up service to several wards, thus ensuring adequate stock

holdings in ward areas. Check ward stocks on designated wards on a regular basis and to

monitor and update the stocklists. Generate stock orders under the topping-up service to

clinical areas.

Ward based duties

1. To supply discharge medication in conjunction with the ward pharmacy team through

involvement with medical and nursing staff identifying patients for discharge, checking the

locker against the TTO and dispensing, re-labelling as necessary.

2. To ensure that accurate drug histories are obtained for identified patients by communication

with the patient/carer and/or by liaising with external organisations including GP practices,

community pharmacies and nursing/residential homes. Refer any problems identified to the

medicines management technician or the clinical pharmacist in a timely manner.

3. To undertake patient counselling on selected patients and to work with the rest of the ward

pharmacy team to ensure patients understand their discharge medication.

4. To be responsible for ensuring that medicines, which are returned to pharmacy from wards,

are either returned to stock or disposed of in accordance with current procedures.

5. To maintain up to date handover to ensure effective communication to other pharmacy staff.

General Practice

1. Respond to prescription requests from community patients, nursing/care home staff,

pharmacy staff and GPs, processing them within 48 hours for routine prescriptions and

same day for urgent prescriptions. This can include re-routing prescriptions to out of hours

pharmacies for same day delivery.

2. Use practice and CCG templates to record near patient monitoring for high risk drugs.

3. Identify blood tests, recalls and reviews using established protocols and forward these to

the appropriate clinician.

4. Review hospital discharge notifications and reconcile medication against current repeats,

flagging up and highlighting discrepancies.

5. Support practice prescribing budgets by on-going monitoring, audit and analysis of drug

use and support practices in reviewing, developing and enhancing cost-effective

prescribing. This includes staying aware of latest QIPP and other cost targets.

6. Help review medication with the pharmacists and make recommendations for prescribing

changes to improve outcomes and ensure prescribing of the most cost-effective product

7. Conduct regular audits on medicines storage and waste, ensuring local and national

guidelines are adhered to and issues are reported to the appropriate party.

8. Perform face to face reviews with patients and ensure results are recorded and reported to

the clinical pharmacist, practice pharmacist or GP.

9. Produce recommendations to reduce medicines waste

10. Support prescribing clerks by helping with queries relating to prescription requests and look

for ways to improve the efficiency and safety of the prescription issuing process, ensuring

queries are resolved and scripts issues in line with the timeframe in the practice procedure

(usually two working days).

11. Participate in practice clinical meetings, patient participation groups, and other meetings to

improve engagement of the role of PTPT within the GP model and to promote issues

relevant to prescribing and medicines optimisation

12. Support the pharmacist in implementing drug withdrawals and alerts e.g. MHRA alerts.

Other Duties:

To document errors and support process review and improvement to reduce internal and

external error rates in accordance with clinical governance guidelines

To take responsibility for specific areas of work or projects as may be agreed from time to

time, including contributing towards team goals and objectives.

To assist with the cleaning and maintenance of the work areas, equipment and clothing.

To ensure a tidy work environment, so that space is effectively utilised and bench space is kept

clear and clean so good dispensing practice is maintained this includes stock rotation and expiry

checks.

To ensure all complaints about the service are recorded and dealt with effectively and promptly

according to procedure.

To undertake such other reasonable duties as may be required from time to time.

To participate in weekend, late night, on call and bank holiday service in accordance with
