Job summary

A busy 7-partner practice is seeking an enthusiastic part-time Practice Nurse with a special interest in diabetes to join our very friendly team at our Surgery in Wimborne, Dorset. We have recently been rated as Good by CQC and have high levels of patient satisfaction. RGN qualification and primary care experience is essential. Specialty experience in diabetes preferred.

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team.

The duties will include all tasks normally undertaken by an experienced RGN and any additional roles agreed between the nurse and the doctors as appropriate, having regard to current training.

Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities:

  • Assist in or perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nurses and GPs
  • Interest in diabetes
  • Routine immunisations/Childhood immunisations
  • Cytology
  • Wound care / ulcer care/Doppler
  • Removal of Sutures
  • New Patient Medicals/Urinalysis
  • Travel vaccinations
  • ECGs
  • Venepuncture
  • Hypertension Management
  • Ear syringing
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate being examined by another clinician
  • Assisting GPs with coil fittings
  • Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
  • Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate
  • Other tasks as agreed

    • Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
    • Participation in administrative systems in the Practice
    • A duty to advise senior nurses of potential problems or errors within a range of assigned tasks
    • Attend and participate in any Practice meetings when required
    • Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post
    • Able to recognise when there is a need to refer complex patients.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of cold chain, vaccine storage, administration and related theory and ensure best practice is maintained.
