Job summary
Nurses play a vital role in general practice (GP) by supporting patient care, improving health outcomes, and easing the workload of doctors. Their responsibilities include conducting health assessments, managing chronic diseases (like diabetes and hypertension), giving vaccinations, educating patients about health and lifestyle, and providing wound care. Nurses often act as the first point of contact for patients, offering advice, triage, and early intervention. Their work promotes preventive care, helps manage minor illnesses, and ensures patients receive continuous, coordinated care. By building strong relationships with patients, nurses also improve trust and satisfaction within the healthcare system.
Main duties of the job

- Post-registration experience in a primary care or community setting (preferred but not essential).
- Completion of, or willingness to undertake, relevant specialist training in areas such as:
- Chronic disease management (e.g., diabetes, asthma, COPD)
- Cervical screening (smear taking certification)
- Childhood and adult immunisations
- Travel health advice and vaccinations
- Wound care and management
- Up-to-date Basic Life Support (BLS) and Anaphylaxis training.
- Evidence of continued professional development (CPD).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication, clinical, and organisational skills.
Desirable
- Experience in chronic disease management.
- Familiarity with clinical systems (e.g., EMIS) is advantageous but training can be provided.
