Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic Theatre Assistant to join our ever expanding successful team at Spa Medical Centre, Surgical Services Department in Melksham, Wiltshire.

You will work alongside our current theatre assistants and administrators who provide the highest standard of support to both our Clinical and Managerial Teams.

Main duties of the job

As part of the Theatre Team you will provide high quality patient care under the guidance and supervision of the Surgical Services Clinical Lead and Surgical Services Manager.

Assist in both theatre administration and clinical duties.

Prepare the environment for clinical procedures in the Minor Theatre Suite.

Undertake training associated with minor surgical procedures and maintain standards of work in accordance with practice policy and procedures.

Assist the GP surgeons and plastics surgeons with minor theatre lists working as a theatre assistant.

Prepare the environment and assist with Outpatient Clinics.

Adhere to our stringent Infection Control Policy, guidelines and procedures.

Spa Surgical Services provide high quality patient care under the guidance and supervision of the Surgical Services Clinical Lead, Surgical Services Manager, GP Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists.

The post holder is accountable to the Partnership, reports to the in-house Nurse Mentor and is managerially responsible to the Surgical Services Clinical Lead and Practice Manager.

Five weeks annual leave in a calendar year, pro rata for part time staff

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Assist the GP surgeons, plastic surgeons and dermatologist in  the assessment, planning and delivery of individualised patient care in a safe working environment
  • Assist the trained staff in preparing an appropriate clinical area. Ensure it is appropriately resourced enabling the safe and timely delivery of patient care.
  • Act as a circulating nurse to the GP surgeons and trained scrub nurse, ensuring that surgical instruments and equipment are properly prepared prior to the operation.
  • Cleaning the operating theatre before, between and after operations, and participating in the deep cleaning programme, adhering to hygiene and infection control protocols.
  • Safe clinical waste and sharps disposal.
  • Develop and utilise good communication skills in relation to patient care and the smooth running of the department. Relay messages to members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure safe practice.
  • To receive and check-in patients arriving for their procedure. Provide support before, during and after their surgical procedure, ensuring patient safety at all times.
  • Perform admission and discharge of plastic surgery patients with trained supervision, and perform baseline clinical observations, ensuring accurate completion of necessary documentation associated with the patient.
  • Assist the Theatre Team to ensure accurate and legible notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patient’s notes and theatre registers.
  • Identify and report any significant changes that might affect the patient’s health and wellbeing to a member of the Clinical Team.
  • To administer the appropriate first aid measures in an emergency, following training.
  • Report immediately to senior staff any incident, accidents or complaints and take any necessary action as instructed.
  • Assist the trained staff in the delivery of high quality patient care ensuring everyone is treated with dignity and respect of their religious beliefs. 
  • To be aware of and comply with the Data Protection Act 1998.
  • Develop a basic understanding of the practice clinical computer system.
  • Assist the trained staff in ensuring adequate stocks and supplies are available and to be responsible for ordering and maintaining items as delegated.
  • Contribute towards the creation of a welcoming atmosphere for patients and visitors to the Surgical Department.
  • Be competent in the use of equipment, within the department, following training. Report any concerns in the use of this equipment to a senior member of staff.
  • To assist in the care and accurate labelling and transportation of specimens to the RUH Pathology Department, maintaining accurate records of all activities.
  • Participate in the induction of new theatre assistants.
  • Responsibility for stock levels, submitting consumable orders and the theatre equipment log. Assisting the Surgical Admin Team with general administrative work when lists are cancelled.
  • Undertake activities as delegated and taught to ensure appropriate assistance to the Theatre Team.
