Practice Nurse / Nurse Associate

Job summary

  • Hours: Ideally two long days (Wednesday and Thursday), but we are happy to be flexible for the right candidate.

  • Start Date: As soon as possible

  • Contract: Fixed term for 6 months, with a possibility of extension

Main duties of the job

We're ideally looking for someone confident in delivering a range of services including:

  • Venepuncture

  • ECGs

  • Urinalysis

  • Cervical screening (smears)

  • Baby and childhood immunisations

  • Wound care and dressings

  • Chronic disease management (desirable but not essential)

If you don't yet have experience in all areas, we'd still love to hear from you. Training and support can be provided for the right candidate.

Essential Requirements

  • NMC registration as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) or Nursing Associate (NA)

  • A passion for high-quality, patient-centred care

  • Strong communication and teamworking skills

As a Practice Nurse or Practice Nurse Associate at Wallingford Medical Practice, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to our diverse patient population. Working within our experienced nursing team and wider multidisciplinary group, you will be expected to work autonomously while also contributing to shared patient care and service improvement initiatives.

This is a varied and rewarding role where your clinical expertise, patient-centred approach, and proactive attitude will be highly valued.

Your responsibilities will include:

Clinical Care & Treatment Room Duties

  • Delivering treatment room services such as:

    • Venepuncture

    • ECGs

    • Urinalysis

    • Wound assessment and management

    • Cervical cytology (smears)

    • Baby and adult immunisations

    • NHS health checks and routine screening

  • Supporting chronic disease management where appropriate (e.g. asthma, diabetes, hypertension)

  • Administering vaccines and injections safely and in line with current guidance

  • Promoting self-care and healthy lifestyle choices through patient education

Professional Practice & Teamwork

  • Working collaboratively with GPs, other nurses, healthcare assistants, and allied health professionals to support integrated patient care

  • Participating in clinical meetings, audits, and quality improvement initiatives

  • Contributing to safeguarding processes and responding appropriately to clinical risk or concern

  • Maintaining a compassionate and respectful approach in all patient interactions

Governance, Quality & Safety

  • Adhering to local and national guidelines, including infection control, cold chain, and medicines management

  • Maintaining accurate and timely clinical records in accordance with NMC and practice standards

  • Keeping up to date with continuing professional development (CPD) and participating in mandatory training

  • Practising in accordance with the NMC Code and upholding high standards of professionalism at all times

  • The successful candidate must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered General Nurse (RGN) or Registered Nursing Associate (NA) and have previous experience working in a general practice or primary care setting. You will need to demonstrate competence in core treatment room skills, including venepuncture, wound care, ECG recording, urinalysis, and vaccine administration. A sound understanding of clinical governance, infection control, and safeguarding responsibilities in a primary care environment is essential. Strong communication skills, the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, and a commitment to delivering safe, evidence-based, patient-centred care are also key requirements. Proficiency in using clinical IT systems and maintaining accurate clinical records is expected, alongside a professional approach in line with the NMC Code and a commitment to ongoing continuing professional development (CPD).

  • While not essential, additional training or experience in cervical screening (smear taking), childhood immunisations, and chronic disease management (such as asthma, diabetes, or hypertension reviews) would be highly advantageous. Familiarity with Quality and Outcomes Framework (QoF) indicators and local referral pathways is also beneficial. Experience contributing to service development, clinical audits, or quality improvement projects is welcomed, as is involvement in patient education, health promotion, or mentorship/supervision of junior staff.
