Job responsibilities

Principal responsibilities; including but not limited to the following:

Specialist interest in Diabetes

Routine Treatment Room Procedures:

Minor illness:

 Carrying out routine consultations

 Referring patients to a doctor appropriately

 Entering all consultations into Patient’s records using the  appropriate Read Code

 Collection of laboratory specimens including venepuncture and swabs

 New patient assessments & NHS Health Checks

 Wound care

 Adult and children immunisations

 Height and weight checks

 Urinalysis

 Suture and staple removal

 Blood pressure checks

 24 hr blood pressure monitoring

 Electrocardiograms

 Blood glucose checks

 Nebulising

 Health Education and Advice on:

 Smoking

 Alcohol

 Diet

 Exercise

 Self-examination

 Drugs

 Safe sex

 Emergency Treatment Room Procedures:

 Management of acute emergencies

Wound management

 Soft tissue injuries

 Management of burns and scalds

Treatment Room Administration:

 Maintenance of Treatment Room equipment

 Maintaining a log of serviceability of equipment

 Maintenance of Treatment Room stock levels

 Monitoring clinical refrigerator temperatures

 Immunisation administration

 Well women administration

Communication:

 Liaison with:

 Multidisciplinary Team

 Secondary Care Team

 Health Promotion Dept.

 Clinical Governance:

 To develop the Practice Nurse role

 Devise and act upon audits

 Maintain and develop protocols and clinical guidelines

 Maintain currency in mandatory training

 Participation in personal development

 General Responsibilities:

 Maintaining absolute patient confidentiality at all times.

 Showing awareness & compliance with all security, fire and H&S policies

 Showing compliance with Patient Group Directives

 Showing compliance with all Practice policies and procedures

 Attending all Practice Meetings and CCG meetings as required by the Practice Manager

 Undertaking any other duties within your capability that is reasonably requested to be carried out by a Manager

 Following training, Practice Nurses should be able to:

 Give advice on travel health

 Undertake ear examination and irrigation

 Undertake telephone consultations & triage calls

 Participate in QOF, enhanced services and other designated services as required by the practice

 Specialist Treatment Room Procedures:

 Participation in Chronic Disease Management, ideally diabetes and respiratory, in conjunction with the GPs and admin team.

 Travel health clinics

 Family Planning and Well Women:

 Taking cervical smears

 Giving advice on contraception

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Registered General Nurse with the NMC
• Competent in basic nursing duties required for the post
• Knowledge of Infection Control procedures
• Knowledge of Clinical Waste procedures
• Computer Literate
• Can demonstrate a methodical approach to working in a busy environment
• Evidence of working in a planned & organised way
• Motivated and enthusiastic
• Enthusiasm for training & personal development
• Ability to use own initiative and to be resourceful
• Ability to use own judgement
• Flexibility
• Can demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent communication skills

Desirable

• Past experience with EMIS
• Previous General Practice Nursing experience
• Experience in gynaecological nursing skills
• Experience in chronic disease management, ideally diabetes and respiratory
• Diabetes experience desirable
