Clinical
Care
Such
duties will include:
1. Working alongside the clinicians in the
provision of patient care
2. Working to agreed protocols
3. Undertaking screening in the following
areas:
- Measuring height, weight, BMI
- Urinalysis
- Measuring blood pressure,
temperature, and pulse
- Measuring peak flow
- Recording ECGs
- 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
4. Recognising changes in the patients
observations which must be reported and acted on
5. Dispatching samples and pathology lab
ordering
6. Assisting clinicians in emergency
management of patients
7. Enabling patients to access appropriate
professionals in the practice team
8. Acting as a chaperone
9. Assisting other members of the clinical
team in organising the range of clinics offered
10. Appreciating the principles of Healthy
Living
11. Providing and maintaining relevant health
promotion literature for patients
12. Following clinical protocols where
appropriate and relevant
Clinical
Nursing Practice
Such
duties will include:
1. Undertaking wound care to the complexity
of leg ulcer management
2. Undertaking suture removal
3. Undertaking Doppler readings
4. Assisting the doctors in providing minor
surgery sessions
5. Carrying out new patient checks with
senior nurse or doctor
6. Undertaking venepuncture
7. Providing nutritional advice for patients
who are overweight or suffer from CHD or diabetes
8. Offering lifestyle advice on smoking and
exercise and referring as appropriate
9. Administering
injections under an individualised prescription or Patient Group Direction to include child vaccines and travel vaccines
amongst others
10. Ensuring safe storage, rotation and
disposal of vaccines and drugs
11. Undertaking ear syringing after the patient
has been assessed by a senior nurse or GP
12. Advising patients about safe ear care
13. Applying
infection control measures within the practice according to local and national
guidelines
14. Assisting patients and colleagues in
adopting sound infection control measures
15. Being competent in anaphylaxis and
resuscitation techniques
16. Having
a basic understanding of emergency contraception and referring patients as
appropriate
17. Advising on risk of pregnancy and having a
basic knowledge of contraception options
18. Having
a working knowledge of the national and local cervical and mammography
screening programmes and undertaking cervical smears.
19. Discussing
breast self-awareness with patients and demonstrating breast self-examination
techniques
20. Discussing and giving basic advice on male
health issues
21. Undertaking NHS health checks by
appointment using guidelines
Care
and Programme Management
Such
duties will include:
1. Clearly presenting patients
2. Ensuring
stock items of equipment, consumables and forms are ordered and provided in GP
& treatment rooms, including emergency equipment
3. Using
and maintaining clinical equipment efficiently and ensuring servicing is
undertaken. Such equipment will include
the spirometer and the 24-hour BP monitor
4. Contributing new ideas to improving
patient care
5. Instructing patients in appropriate
techniques or tasks
6. Developing systems for ensuring the
follow up of patients tests etc
7. Having a basic understanding of diabetes
8. Assisting in the diagnosis of diabetic
patients and making appropriate referrals
9. Supplying appropriate material for
patient education
10. Managing
the emergency treatment of a diabetic patient with a hypo/hyperglycaemic attack
according to practice guidelines
11. Having
a basic understanding of asthma care; its diagnosis, treatment and the
principles of self-management
12. Checking patients' inhaler technique and
measuring peak flow readings
13. Having
a basic understanding of COPD treatment to support patients and making
appropriate referrals.
14. Having a basic understanding of the
pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system
15. Identifying and advising patients on risk
factors associated with cardiovascular disease
16. Understanding
the basic management of patients with hypertension, angina, myocardial
infarction, and cerebrovascular accident
17. Working
within agreed protocols to empower patients to manage their own cardiovascular
disease
18. Making
appropriate referral for review based on issues identified in patients'
management and needs
Clinical
Practice Leadership
Such
duties will include:
1. Working effectively as a team
2. Interacting with patients and colleagues
in a professional manner
3. Assisting in clinical audit and the
setting and monitoring of standards of care
4. Assisting and teaching others in a
clinical setting, including unqualified staff
5. Acting as an assessor/mentor to other staff
where necessary
Clinical
Practice Development
Such
duties will include:
1. Maintaining set standards of organisation
in treatment rooms/practice
2. Taking appropriate action if standards
are not being met
3. Recognising
potential areas of conflict, preventing where possible and reporting to senior
members of staff if unable to resolve
4. Being
aware of current research approaches to patient care and incorporating this
into the practice
5. Understanding the ethical dilemmas that
impinge on general practice
6. Supporting structures that are in place
for the smooth running of the practice
7. Contributing to the efficient utilisation
of the nursing resource
Clinical
Administration
Such
duties will include:
1. Inputting
comprehensive treatment and advice given notes onto the clinical system
following consultations with patients and referring to notes before giving
advice or treating patients
2. Completing pathology & x-ray request
forms
