Job summary

Exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, forward thinking team. The surgery is situated in a purpose built building offering primary care services to registered patients of Abertillery Group Practice. The practice is multidisciplinary focused and within a supportive team environment. The role will be placed within the medicine management team, providing support to the practice pharmacist.

The role is designed to provide an accurate, timely, and qualitative process for processing repeat prescriptions requests for the registered patients. To undertake general routine safety audits to support the pharmacist and general practitioners with the medication review process. Support the repeat prescribing for identified vulnerable patients and act as their point of contact for medication queries and requests. To undertake administrative tasks resulting from the prescribing process as allocated by the pharmacist and pharmacy technician.

Main duties of the job

  • Commence the processing of straight forward prescriptions for authorisation; Action incoming emergency supply e-mails as appropriate; Support with more complex requests taking action as directed by the pharmacist
  • Safeguard strict adherence to patient confidentiality at all times; To work in accordance with the practice prescribing policy at all times; To undertake the regular running of regular safety audits on behalf of the pharmacist to identify at-risk patients, those outstanding medication reviews and those who require regular monitoring
  • To participate in the repeat prescription process set up in practice to ensure patients are contacted and / or their repeat prescriptions are processed, as required and appropriate
  • Answer the telephone promptly and politely to both patients and the clinical team on behalf of the pharmacy team
  • Liaise with pharmacies and care homes to ensure that the correct medications are processed in a timely manner; To generate repeat prescription requests received via letter, Email, or repeat prescription form; To generate patient requests for prescription items not on their list by sending a task to the Doctor
  • To ensure prescriptions are processed in a timely fashion ensuring that there are no delays which would adversely impact on the GP or pharmacist workload; To sort and file prescriptions ready for collection when returned to reception; Undertake all other delegated tasks given by the pharmacist

About us

The practice team is multidisciplinary with 4 GP's, IP Pharmacist, 1 IP Practice Nurse, Practice Nurse, HCA, Psychological Healthcare Practitioner, and a very supportive and knowledgeable admin team. We are situated in a purpose built building, The Bridge Health Centre, serving our registered patients.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Collect the box of prescription requests each morning for the pharmacy team to process
  • Commence the processing of straight forward prescriptions for authorisation
  • Action incoming emergency supply e-mails as appropriate
  • Support the pharmacy technician with more complex requests taking action as directed by the technician or pharmacist
  • Safeguard strict adherence to patient confidentiality at all times
  • To work in accordance with the practice prescribing policy at all times
  • To undertake the regular running of regular safety audits on behalf of the pharmacist to identify at-risk patients, those outstanding medication reviews and those who require regular monitoring
  • Ensure corrective action is taken to reduce errors by discussing the query results with the practice pharmacist and pharmacy technician
  • To use the QOF box to support the proactive medication review process and ensure that the relevant action is taken to prepare for the medication review date
  • Understand the annual Prescribing Quality Scheme (CEPP) work plan to ensure you can support the planned achievements, improvements and cost savings
  • To participate in the repeat prescription process set up in practice to ensure patients are contacted and / or their repeat prescriptions are processed, as required and appropriate
  • Answer the telephone promptly and politely to both patients and the clinical team on behalf of the pharmacy team
  • To ensure alerts are placed on patients notes relating to any prescribing issue including those where it has been agreed that they can order by telephone (agreement with practice / reception manager and GP only)
  • To ensure all cancelled prescriptions are correctly audited on the GP system and destroyed accordingly
  • In partnership with the pharmacy technician, liaise with pharmacies and care homes to ensure that the correct medications are processed in a timely manner
  • To generate repeat prescription requests received via letter, Email, or repeat prescription form (except CDs and non-acute)
  • To generate patient requests for prescription items not on their list by sending a task to the Doctor
  • To ensure correct protocols are followed by reception with regard ordering and tracking of controlled drug requests by producing the sign out sheets for attachment with the printed prescription (non EPS only)
  • To remove printed prescriptions from printer and assign to relevant prescriber if pharmacist not available to sign
  • To ensure prescriptions are processed in a timely fashion ensuring that there are no delays which would adversely impact on the GP or pharmacist workload
  • To sort and file prescriptions ready for collection when returned to reception
  • Undertake all other delegated tasks given by the pharmacist and / or pharmacy technician
