Job summary

Due to a growing list size, we are looking for a part-time Phlebotomist to join our Practice team. We are a progressive thinking training practice with a great team ethos and a committed and supportive Primary Health Care Team.

Working under the direct supervision of the senior practice nurse and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients as the result of a direct referral from a GP or nurse practitioner. Work will also include ordering and maintaining sufficient stock levels. 

Hours of work: up to 16.5 hours per week

Shift patterns are negotiable between the hours of 8.00 and 15.00 Monday- Friday, but ideally to include 8.00-15.00 on a Monday or Tuesday. 

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and flexible candidate with excellent interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will have experience working with the general public and ideally in a healthcare setting.

About us

We are a 7 doctor training practice affiliated to both the Banbury and Northampton schemes. We have a well-established and experienced Nursing Team comprising of 3 Nurse Practitioners, 2 Health Care Assistants and a Phlebotomist as well as a large Administrative Team.

We are part of the Brackley and Towcester Primary Care Network. Through the PCN, we have introduced Clinical Pharmacists, First Contact Physios, Mental Health Worker and Social Prescribers to the Practice.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable and relaxed as possible and confirming their agreement to the collection of a blood sample
  • Collection of sample(s)s of blood in accordance with training and procedures
  • Ensuring samples are stored in appropriate containers
  • Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity
  • Checking patient identification against GP/nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible
  • Recording collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with practice procedure
  • Ensuring that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion.
  • Ensuring that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff

Health & safety:

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
  • Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines
  • Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements
