Health Care Assistant/Phlebotomist

Job summary

Devonport Health Centre is recruiting either a Health Care Assistant Level 3 or a Phlebotomist who wishes to progress to Health Care Assistant Level 3 at the earliest opportunity. The hours will be 20 to 25 over 3 to 4 days as agreed.

The successful candidate will be supported by very skilled and experienced Nursing Team comprising of an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Chronic Disease Practice Nurse, 2 Practice Nurses, a Trainee Nursing Associate and a Health Care Assistant. We encourage our team in their career progression and are happy to support development.

Devonport Health Centre has a broad skill mixture of GPs, Clinical Pharmacist Mental Health Nurse, First Contact Physio in addition to the Nursing Team. Our Admin Team support the whole clinical team in providing a high standard of care and service.

Main duties of the job

The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  1. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
  2. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
  3. Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system
  4. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
  5. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies
  6. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
  7. Maintaining an effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff
  8. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Phlebotomist may be requested to:

a.Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead

b.Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

c.Support and participate in shared learning within the practice

d.Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota

A small team who work closely together, giving our best hoping to achieve the best care to our patients.

Undertake record and follow guidelines for the tasks for which you have received appropriate training.

Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigations by the pathology laboratory.

Measuring and recording following physiological measurements in routine presentations:

  • Blood Pressure
  • Pulse Rate and Rhythm
  • Temperature
  • Height and Weight Body Mass Index
  • Visual Acuity
  • Venepuncture
  • ECG

Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions.

Assist in raising awareness of health and wellbeing, how it can be promoted.

Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence.

Support and monitor patients during nebulisation therapy.

Ear syringing in accordance with local and NICE guidelines.

When trained, administer flu vaccinations.

Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session

Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance

Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC policy

Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
