Job summary

Youll be a graduate who has undertaken postgraduate training and you'll work under the supervision of a doctor. Youll be trained to perform a number of day-to-day tasks including:

  • taking medical histories from patients
  • performing physical examinations
  • diagnosing illnesses
  • seeing patients with long-term chronic conditions
  • performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • analysing test results
  • developing management plans
  • provide health promotion and disease prevention advice for patients.

Main duties of the job

This role complements that of a GP. Youll have an increasing role to play as part of the diverse multi-skilled practice team, including:

  • managing patient lists
  • providing health promotion and disease prevention advice for patients
  • performing physical examinations
  • diagnosing illnesses
  • seeing patients with long-term conditions
  • undertaking residential, nursing and home visits
  • taking medical histories from patients
  • analysing test results
  • making referrals and
  • developing management plans.

Great Barford Surgery is a semi-rural dispensing practice located in the village of Great Barford; we are a two Partner Practice with support from salaried GPs and Locums that are familiar with local procedure and policies. We have a team of nursing and qualified dispensary staff that work with the Doctors on a daily basis to offer a comprehensive service to our patients.

Essential

  • There are currently two integrated undergraduate Masters in Physician Associate Studies (MPAS) programmes available at the University of Central Lancashire and the University of Reading. You'll need three A-levels (or equivalent), typically at ABB or above, including chemistry and a further science to get a place on a course. Both courses are full time and last four years.
  • Most training to become a physician associate, however, is at postgraduate diploma (PGDip)/Masters level. In order to get a place on a postgraduate course you'll usually need a first degree or equivalent in life or health sciences.
  • Typical degree subjects include:
  • allied health degree (e.g. occupational therapy, diagnostic/therapeutic radiography, physiotherapy or paramedic science)
  • anatomy
  • biochemistry/medical biochemistry
  • biology/human biology
  • biomedical science
  • chemistry
  • genetics
  • medical science
  • microbiology
  • nursing
  • pharmacology
  • pharmacy
  • physiology.
  • Course providers often require a minimum 2:1 first degree, although some universities will accept a 2:2 in a relevant subject. Alternative qualifications and relevant healthcare experience may be accepted at some institutions.
