Job summary

Forum Health Centre is looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and experienced Senior Medical Secretary to join our team. We are a CQC 'outstanding' rated GP practice with 20,000 patients and a first class multi-disciplinary clinical team supported by an experienced clinical administration team.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential as the post holder will be expected to be able to communicate effectively and sensitively with a wide range of people patients, colleagues and external agencies in both written and verbal form. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a good command of the English language and grammar.

You will be able to cope well under pressure and have a good understanding of the patient pathway. You should enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team and be confident liaising with patients, medical staff, general practitioners and hospitals.

The post holder will be expected to organise their workload and duties accordingly, in such a way to make a direct and positive contribution to the Practice, exercising initiative and maintaining patient confidentiality at all times.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure patient referral letters are typed and sent to the relevant Hospital / Department / Consultant within the practice guidelines.
  • Liaise with the GPs regarding patients referrals, appointments, admissions, test results, letters and queries.
  • To liaise with patients, consultants and their teams, other NHS agencies, providing and receiving sensitive or confidential information where the communication topic can be delicate and/ or difficult.
  • The post holder will be expected to exercise judgement when dealing with inquiries, analysing, prioritising and resolving problems where possible, and taking decisions regarding available options in line with practice guidelines and confidentiality.
  • Maintain a comprehensive tracking and safety netting system for referrals and advice and guidance requests.
  • To help maintain accurate patient records by coding information as requested by clinicians.
  • Provide team leadership, supervision, training and mentor support
  • Processing non-GMS work (i.e. SARs, insurance/solicitors requests, DVLA forms, DWP and Capita forms)
  • Managing all administrative queries as required
