Job summary

The Centre Practice has a vacancy for a Health Care Assistant to join our friendly team to cover maternity leave. The contract is fixed term for up to 52 weeks. Experience is preferred but training will be provided as required.

Main duties of the job

The role will primarily include the delivery of the annual chronic disease checks and NHS health checks.

Other duties may include ECGs, urine testing and supporting the GPs with minor operations and coil fitting.

Job responsibilities

TitleHealth Care Assistant (HCA)

Line Manager Practice Senior Nurse

PurposeTo assist the GPs and practice nurse team in the service delivery and management of patients.

Specific Responsibilities

The following is not intended to be exhaustive as new duties may be added from time to time after consultation and training.

Clinical Skills

After training and strictly following any guidelines or protocols the HCA maybe expected to carry out the following procedures.

  • Record all patient contact be it face to face, on the telephone or via letter or email in the patients clinical notes and read code as needed.

  • Record information and activities undertaken with patients and carers accurately and within the appointment slot.

  • Give accurate information to patients within their own competence.

  • Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory.

  • Blood pressure

  • Pulse rate and rhythm

  • Temperature

  • Height and weight

  • Body mass index

  • ECGs.

  • Venepuncture.

  • Chronic disease health check

  • NHS health checks.

  • B12 injection and vaccinations including influenza, pneumococcal and shingles once training has been given following patient specific directives. (PSD)

  • Support clinicians in minor surgery and coil fitting.

  • Act as chaperone as requested.

  • Prepare and maintain rooms and equipment before, during and after patient contact. Ensure the room and equipment is clean, tidy and ready for the next user, signing the check list as requested.

  • Ensure your allocated GP rooms are re-equipped as directed and the check list signed as requested.

  • Allocated cleaning jobs, signing check list as requested.

  • When quiet be proactive in ensuring your allocated jobs are completed, any photocopying, stocking up and help where needed within the nursing team.

  • Undertake training as required by the surgery and the ICB.

Qualifications

Essential

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above.
  • Computer literate and keyboard skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience of working with the public.

  • Previous Health Care experience.
  • Experience of working in a GP surgery.
