Job summary

Are you interested in being part of innovative and progressive change in primary care in the North East and North Cumbria (NECN)? GP Practices connected to the Deep End Network are looking to recruit one or more flexible and experienced Clinical Psychologists, to provide brief consultations at point of need in the role of GP Psychologist.

Deep End NENC was established in 2020 as a partnership between local GP leaders and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for the NENC, with financial support from the NENC Integrated Care System. We are focused on working collaboratively to create positive change for practices, patients and communities, working to address the inverse care law and health inequalities. Deep End practices in the NENC are those whose practice population meant they are ranked in the lowest IMD decile nationally.

The roles are being created following a successful pilot in  Newcastle which was set up to improve care for people living with mental health problems from areas of higher social deprivation. Post-holder(s) will provide brief specialist assessment, formulation and intervention for patients across the lifespan and cognitive ability and will refer on to further therapy, treatment and support services where appropriate.

This may be of interest to those who are interested in community psychology ideas as well as those who have experience of working previously in primary care settings.

Main duties of the job

To provide a Generalist Primary Care Clinical Psychology Service to patients of all ages with undifferentiated acute and chronic mental health conditions.

∙ Offering advice and consultation to colleagues from other disciplines and to carers.

∙ To develop - through experimentation, evaluation, reflection and ongoing dialogue – a Primary Care Psychology service which is effective and equitable, and which reduces GP workload. This will include development of protocols/procedures, as well as taking active part in ongoing evaluation.

∙ To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the Practice policies and procedures.

∙ To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research

∙ To demonstrate a high level of responsibility when working with people who are expressing suicidal ideation, or who are deliberately self-harming and/or those who could potentially cause harm to others.

∙ Working with multidisciplinary teams and engaging in research, audit and training and supervision are aspects of this service

About us

Location and working hours can be negotiated to accommodate the right candidates.  Four practices from South Tyneside, Sunderland, Newcastle and Gateshead are involved in this innovative proof of concept pilot, with 2 sessions per week per practice (8 sessions in total) over a 12 month period. Successful candidates will be jointly employed by the participating practices.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This role is a pilot, and as such, we will prioritise flexibility and ongoing negotiation of the role. However, the broad principles are as follows:

The Clinical Psychologist (CP) role will mirror that of a GP as much as possible, i.e.

a. Dealing with undifferentiated mental health presentations of patients of all ages.

b. Prioritising short, discrete interventions rather than long-term therapy.

c. Maintain clinical ownership of cases, e.g., making onward referrals if required.

d. Maintaining a balance between ‘reactive’ and ‘proactive’ care: while there is scope for ‘proactive’ interventions e.g., groups, targeted assessment of complex cases, we need to balance this with capacity for new presentations.

Provide individual and team supervision and formulation - in both an ad-hoc and formalised way.

· To provide a Generalist Primary Care Clinical Psychology Service to patients of all ages with undifferentiated acute and chronic mental health conditions.

· Offering advice and consultation to colleagues from other disciplines and to carers.
