Job summary

The position is for 37.5 hours per week. The working pattern is: Monday to Friday, 10am to 5:30pm.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Office Administrator / Prescription Administrator to join our prescription team. The Prescription Administrator will help manage and process repeat prescription requests and deal with prescription queries from patients. They will also ensure only appropriate tasks are sent to the pharmacist or GPs and support the reception team in locating prescriptions.

There is also the opportunity to pick up some additional office administration work.

We are a non-dispensing practice and therefore you will not be dealing with the actual medication. We deal with electronic and paper prescriptions which are then sent to local pharmacies.

The ideal candidate will need to be confident, accurate, methodical and efficient with excellent communication skills and resilience. The successful candidate must be able to work on their own initiative and have strong IT skills.

This job is very busy and requires flexibility, attention to detail and great customer service.

Experience working in a General Practice would be beneficial but not essential.

Full training will be given to the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

The role includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Ensuring patients repeat medication is processed and issued efficiently and safely and in line with the protocols that are already in place.
  • Ensure that any queries raised are dealt with quickly and correctly.
  • Act as a first point of communication between the clinicians, receptionists, patients and local chemists.
  • Collect repeat prescription requests from the email, website, prescription box and reception.
  • Liaise with patients and chemists regarding queries and requests.
  • Ensure that patient queries on medication are highlighted to the relevant clinician.
  • Regularly audit, record and remove uncollected prescriptions.
  • Ensure patients who require medication reviews have appointments booked with the appropriate clinician.

About us

Burdwood Surgery is a doctors surgery located in the centre of Thatcham. We are a list holding practice with a list size of around 10,300 patients. We are part of the Kennet PCN, working closely with Thatcham Medical Practice and Falkland Surgery.

After the 2022 Patient Survey, we were rated the 5th best practice in Berkshire with a high patient satisfaction rate. We pride ourselves on being a dementia friendly and military veteran friendly medical practice and in our most recent CQC review, we were rated Good in all areas.

Alongside our dedicated admin and reception teams, we also have a large clinical team made up of GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, phlebotomists, paramedic practitioners, clinical pharmacists and social prescribers who all work together to provide the best care for our patients. We also offer training to all our staff and welcome the opportunity for our colleagues to further their skills by attending training courses suitable to their role.

We have great road and rail links; we are only a 5-minute walk from Thatcham Railway Station. Burdwood Surgery is easy commutable from West Berkshire, Reading and Basingstoke.
