Job summary

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly motivated Practice Nurse to provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for our patients; to join and complement our existing team of 3 practice nurses, HCA, and phlebotomist.

Essential skills include wound management, childhood immunisations, venepuncture, and cervical smears, as well as all tasks normally undertaken by an experienced Practice Nurse. Good organisation skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential.

Knowledge of chronic disease management including Diabetes, Asthma and COPD is desirable, but not essential, as training can be given. Home visits for over 85 health checks and occasional domiciliary phlebotomy is also desirable.

The post is for up to 23 hours per week over Monday to Friday (FTE is 37.5 hours per week, so pay and benefits are on a Pro-Rata basis). The ability to provide cross cover for leave is essential.

We will consider applications from newly qualified or experienced nurses looking to enter General Practice for the first time and would support you to undertake the DMU Practice Nursing BSc. Practice Nursing BSc (dmu.ac.uk)

The post is available from February 2023 onwards (start date negotiable) and the pay level (equivalent to AFC band 5/6) dependent upon experience.

Main duties of the job

Our nursing team assist in and perform routine tasks and treatment room services related to patient care. They assist in the management of long term conditions such as asthma, diabetes, COPD and coronary heart disease through undertaking annual reviews and check ups with patients, along with providing advice. They will run well person clinics and health promotion programmes by providing a holistic assessment and lifestyle advice on diet, smoking, alcohol intake and exercise. They offer advice about childhood and adult vaccinations, travel advice and vaccination, and ensure vaccines are administered under patient group directions in accordance with current Green Book/Department of Health recommendations.

Urinalysis and adult venepuncture is part of the role, along with ECGs and 24hr ABPM fitting.

About us

We are a 4 GP Partner Practice, with 3 Practice Nurses and a Health Care Assistant, looking after around 8800 patients. We have a management team, an admin team and a receptionist team. We all work collaboratively to provide the best care for our patients and offer support to each other.

We are based in a newly built building, with onsite parking.

Job Summary:

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, working within the current Practice Nursing Team. Providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team, duties will include all tasks normally undertaken by an experienced RGN and in addition, any roles agreed between the nurse and the doctors as appropriate, having regard to current training and competence.

Job Responsibilities:

Professional:

Assist in and perform routine tasks and treatment room services related to patient care as directed by the practice.

Offer advice about childhood and adult vaccinations, travel advice and vaccination, and ensure vaccines are administered under patient group directions in accordance with current Green Book/Department of Health recommendations.

Running well person clinics and health promotion programmes by providing a holistic assessment and lifestyle advice on diet, smoking, alcohol intake and exercise. Facilitates change.

Urinalysis

Adult Venepuncture including facilitating warfarin management.

Cervical smears with an understanding of guidelines for re-call, HPV screening and sexual health.

Hypertension Management including performing ECGs and 24hr ABPM fitting.

Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs when appropriate.

Interest in assisting in the management of long term conditions such as Asthma, Diabetes, Coronary Heart Disease, COPD & contraception (including administration of dep-provera and assisting minor procedures such as coil fits and implant removals).

Follow agreed clinical protocols with referral to the relevant nurse lead or GPs as appropriate

Able to document Consultations according to NMC guidelines

Ensures awareness of statutory and local clinical procedures with regard to Safeguarding of Children and Adults including systems of referral. Ability to recognise signs and symptoms of child abuse, domestic abuse and female genital mutilation.

Able to recognize and manage anaphylaxis according to current UK guidelines.

Able to perform Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation according to current UK guidelines.

Assist in the provision of minor surgery.

Ability to obtain and document informed consent (either verbal or written).

Ensure infection control guidelines are maintained.

Ability to monitor and manage maintenance of stock and equipment to include refrigeration, maintaining The Cold Chain and emergency equipment.

Confidentiality of information gained at work must be preserved at all times.

Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GPs
