Job summary

Fairwater Health Centre is looking to appoint an enthusiastic, hardworking Practice Nurse to work 37 hours per week, (some variation in those hours is negotiable) due to the retirement of the current post holder.

The applicant should have previous Practice Nursing experience or suitable qualifications. Working patterns can be negotiated with the successful candidates.

We are looking for candidates who will share our commitment to providing excellent healthcare to our patients and become part of our team. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a range of Practice Nurse tasks, including treatment room duties and chronic disease management with an interest in diabetic clinics. The candidate must be fully registered with the NMC and be a Registered General Nurse. NHS pension available.

Main duties of the job

Job Summary:

The Practice Nurse will work as part of the primary healthcare team providing General Medical Services to the patients of Practice.Previous practice nursing experience is extremely desirable and experience of or an interest in the care and management of diabetics.

  • Assist in and perform routine treatment room tasks related to patient care.
  • Cytology.
  • Wound / ulcer care.
  • Removal of Sutures.
  • New Patient Medicals/Urinalysis.
  • Travel Health Advice and Immunisations.
  • ECGs.
  • Asthma.
  • Venepuncture.
  • Hypertension Management.
  • Routine immunisations/Childhood immunisations.
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate .
  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery.
  • Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs.
  • Interest in Diabetes and nurse led diabetic clinics.
  • Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to GPs as appropriate.
  • Warfarin monitoring.
  • Contraceptive checks / Depo Provera.
  • Maintaining treatment, stocking and rotating items as required.
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients who are being examined by another clinician.
  • Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of treatment rooms.
  • Ordering of stock.
  • Ordering of vaccinations to maintain stock levels.
  • Participation in administrative systems in the Practice.
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records.
  • Advise the Practice Manager and Partners of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks.
  • Attend and participate in Practice meetings when required.

About us

We are a long established and busy 6 partner practice, situated in West Cardiff. The practice area covers primarily a suburban area, with a small population in more rural locations. We have approximately 9,900 patients and a team including: 2 salaried GPs, a practice nurses, a health care assistant, 10 receptionists / administration staff and a medical secretary. In addition, the practice benefits from the services of a number of visiting health professions including midwives, health visitors, a counsellor and phlebotomists. We are a training practice and have GP registrars, F2s and Medical students placed with us throughout the year.
