We are seeking to appoint a Respiratory Nurse on a permanent contract for 25 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

The Respiratory Nurse will undertake the assessment, care planning and delivery and management of care required for patients with complex, long term, high risk respiratory conditions, including asthma and COPD and oxygen therapy, and help maintain effective call and recall systems.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Duties

To undertake the assessment, care planning, delivery and management of care required for patients with complex, long term, high risk respiratory conditions, including asthma, COPD and oxygen therapy and help maintain effective call and recall systems.

Analyse signs and symptoms, laboratory tests and other measures of function to formulate a diagnosis and to identify subtle changes in a patients condition.

To undertake specialist assessments including spirometry and interpretation of blood gas measurements.

Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, maintaining accurate patient records.

Involve patients and careers/relatives in the planning and delivery of respiratory care in order to prevent admission/re-admission to hospital.

Support patients, relative and carers to develop the necessary knowledge and skills required to manage respiratory conditions.

Work collaboratively and co-operatively with clinical colleagues to develop services and quality of care delivered.

Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs.

Provide nursing treatment to patients independently or in participation with nurse colleagues and general practitioners with reference to agreed protocols and guidelines.

To hold accountability for the caseload and case manage care in all settings in the patients care pathways this includes patients in acute exacerbation and stable case management.

To work collectively with Community Pharmacists to provide medicines management support and advice.

Facilitate effective communication between patients, members of the primary care health team, secondary care and other associated health agencies.

Provide general assistance to the Practice team and project a positive and friendly image to patients and other visitors, either in person or via the telephone.

Using appropriate infection control procedures to minimise the likelihood of health-care-associated infections occurring to patients, visitors and staff (including you) as a consequence of actions and/or omissions at work.

Qualifications

Essential

  • SRN/RGN or Nursing Degree
  • Post registration nursing course in respiratory care;
  • ARTP Spirometry or approved qualification on Performance and interpretation;
  • Evidence of CPD in Respiratory care and management.

Desirable

  • Smoking Cessation Qualification;
  • non-Medical Prescribing (V300);
  • Advanced clinical assessment skills Qualification.

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 2 years Respiratory nursing experience;
  • Experience in Asthma / COPD;
  • Evidence of CPD in Respiratory care and management.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Sound knowledge of respiratory care and management;
  • Excellent understanding of COPD;
  • Ability to carry out Oxygen Assessments;
  • Excellent knowledge of knowledge of health promotion activities to support patients with respiratory conditions;
  • Ability to undertake capillary blood gases and interpret results;
  • High level of medical terminology understanding;
  • Demonstration of ongoing professional development.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work on own initiative;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills;
  • Computer literate;
  • Able to manage workload autonomously;
  • Knowledge of professional and NHS issues, and policy relating to specialised area;
