As a qualified nurse you will ensure patients diagnosed with a variety of
conditions receive high-quality care, while supporting your colleagues and
promoting good teamwork.
Job Responsibilities
Assist in and perform routine tasks related to
patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs. Once the relevant
training has been undertaken, such tasks may include:
- Basic wound care / ulcer care
- Removal of sutures
- New patient medicals
- Urinalysis
- ECGs
- Peak flow readings
- Venepuncture
- Blood pressure measurements
- Ear syringing
- Routine immunisations
- Health Checks
- Cytology
- Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being
examined by another clinician
- Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings
- Requesting basic pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
- Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses
or GPs as appropriate
Other tasks
including:
- Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GPs
- Maintaining GP and nurses rooms, stocking and rotating items as
required
- Chaperoning and assisting patients who are being examined by
another clinician
- Undertake housekeeping duties including, general tidiness and
cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
- Ordering of vaccinations to maintain stock levels
- Participation in administrative systems in the practice
- At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records
- A duty to advise senior nurses of potential problems or errors
within the range of assigned tasks
- Attend and participate in any practice meetings when required.
- On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits
Any other
delegated duties appropriate to the post.

care and keep up to date with all aspects of nursing care relevant to the
post

manager

- An awareness of own limitations and experience
- To work only in accordance with the UKCC Code of Conduct and within
the scope of professional practice
- To have a written professional development plan and to maintain an
up to date portfolio which meets the requirements of registration with the
UKCC
- Cooperate with annual appraisal meetings
Clinical Governance
- Adhere to the
highest standards of clinical care
- Follow practice
protocols, professional codes of conduct and local policies
- Follow Health &
Safety Principles at all time
- Take
responsibility and accountability for own actions
- Seek GP support
if unsure about the management of a patient
- Be prepared to
undergo clinical supervision
- Contribute to
clinical meetings, particularly using significant event audit
- Ensure adequate
professional indemnity insurance and NMC registration is in place
Miscellaneous
- Contribute
to nurse, triage and clinical meetings as required
- Take part in the
annual performance appraisal system and undertake such training deemed
necessary by the practice
- Keep up-to-date
with issues relating to primary care and job role
- Actively
participate in the teaching/supervision of other qualified or unqualified
staff, patients and carers if required
- Perform other
tasks as required by the GPs or Practice Manager which are reasonable and
in line with the principles of this job description
Other nursing duties
- Take part in the
annual flu immunisation programme
- Support the work
of other nursing staff during slack periods
- Provide cover
for other clinics within your hours (or as overtime if possible) if required
- Keep skills
up-to-date for all nursing duties you might be required to undertake including
smear-taking and wound care, etc
- Act as a
chaperone for GPs as required
- Provide
emergency nursing services, such as ECGs, etc
Confidentiality
- In the course of
seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather,
sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the
right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act
appropriately
- In the
performance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the
post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to
patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare
workers. They may also have access
to information relating to the practice as a business organisation.
All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly
confidential
- Information
relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the
business of the practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance
with the practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and
the protection of personal and sensitive data

The post-holder will assist in promoting and
maintaining their own and others health, safety and security as defined in the
practice Health & Safety Policy, to include:
- Using personal
security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
- Identifying the
risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way
that manages those risks
- Making effective
use of training to update knowledge and skills
- Using
appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy
and safe way and free from hazards
- Reporting
potential risks identified
