Job responsibilities
Job Summary:
To provide and maintain a high standard of
nursing care for patients as well as providing nursing assistance to the
doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team. The duties will include all tasks normally
undertaken by an experienced Practice Nurse including appropriate chronic
disease management and in addition any roles agreed between the nurse and the
doctors as appropriate, having regard to current training.
Job Responsibilities:
- Offer a
holistic approach to travel health by providing comprehensive advice to
patients prior to travel including; vaccinations and medicines, safe sex,
food hygiene, sun protection and administer vaccinations under patient
group directions.
- Offer advice
about childhood and adult vaccinations and administer vaccinations under
patient group directions.
- Perform ear
irrigation.
- Perform
cervical cytology smear tests.
- Administer
injections and implants such as B12, Zoladex, Prostap, Depo Provera
- Provide a
holistic approach to wound management and implement wound care in line
with current evidence based guidelines.
- Suture removal.
- Take part in
chronic disease management (e.g. Asthma, Diabetes, INR, COPD, FP, IHD, HRT,
Cancer Care Review, RA, Learning Disabilities) with a focus on Respiratory conditions, as training and service need requires.
- Take ECGs,
urinalysis, manual & automatic BP, weight height and pulse oximetery.
- Chaperoning and
assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another
clinician.
- Perform
venepuncture according to local guidelines (although not a usual nurse
role)
- Able to
recognize and manage anaphylaxis according to current UK
guidelines.
- Able to perform
Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation according to current UK guidelines.
- Ability to
obtain and document informed consent (both verbal or written).
- Able to
document Consultations according to NMC guidelines, including use of
templates & read codes as per practice policy.
- Ensures
awareness of statutory and local clinical protection procedures, including
systems of referral. Ability to
recognise signs and symptoms of child abuse.
- Collaborative
working as part of the wider Primary Care Network team which would include
extended weekday working and weekend working as part of a rota.
- Confidentially
of information gained at work must be preserved at all times.
Liaison
- It
is important to work closely with reception, office and dispensary staff
to ensure the smooth running of the Practice.
- Work
closely with the GPs, one of whom will always be nominated as on call to
supervise and advise.
- It
is important to maintain good liaison with other surgeries and agencies
including secondary care
- Be an effective
and responsible team member, supporting others and exploring the
mechanisms to develop new ways of working.
Confidentiality:
- In
the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to
gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other
matters. They do so in confidence
and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act
appropriately
- In
the performance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the
post-holder will have access to confidential information relating to
patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcare
workers. They may also have access
to information relating to the Practice as a business organisation.
All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly
confidential
- Information
relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the
business of the Practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in
accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to
confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data

The post-holder will assist in
promoting and maintaining their own and others health, safety and security as
defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy, to include:
- Using
personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice
guidelines
- Identifying
the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a
way that manages those risks
- Making
effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
- Using
appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy
and safe way and free from hazards
- Reporting
potential risks identified

requirements for revalidation are met, the post-holder will participate in any
training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment, such
training to include:
- Participation
in an annual individual performance review, including taking
responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or
professional development
- Taking
responsibility for own development, learning and performance and
demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar
work
- Requests for training
will be considered in line with the needs of the practice. Personal
development will be encouraged and supported by the Practice. It is the
individuals responsibility to remain up to date.
- Participation
in the education, training and induction of colleagues is expected.
- Development
alongside the nursing and management team of an in house nurse-training
programme.
- Complete annual
mandatory training in a timely manner

The
post-holder will strive to maintain quality within the Practice, and will:
