Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity at the Market Harborough Medical Centre for a Healthcare Assistant to join or large Clinical team. This is an exciting new opportunity to join a busy, highly regarded, supportive and forward-thinking GP training practice.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide such nursing services as are required by patients who have booked appointments in the Healthcare Assistant clinic including blood pressure monitoring, new patient checks, phlebotomy, basic wound care and dressings.
  • Provide hypertension reviews.
  • Provide NHS Health Checks.
  • Vitamin B12 Injections.
  • Provide opportunistic screening and health promotion.
  • Provide assistance for GPs performing minor operations, including preparation of room, equipment and patient, assistance during procedure, etc.
  • Act as chaperone for GPs as required.
  • Provide emergency nursing services, such as urgent ECGs, as required by the GPs.
  • Work within practice protocols.
  • Ensure knowledge and skills are kept up-to-date for the full range of clinical duties that you may be asked to undertake.

About us

Market Harborough Medical Centre is in the centre of a busy market town and is one of three practices including St Luke’s and Husband Bosworth. We have a large list size of patients with a team of partners and salaried GPs. We have an experienced nursing team, and a variety of additional roles including physician’s associates. We have a very active and engaged PPG.

Job responsibilities

OTHER CLINICAL DUTIES

  • Take part in the annual flu immunisation programme.
  • Support the work of other nursing staff during slack periods.
  • Provide cover for other clinics within your hours (or as overtime if possible) if required by the nurse manager.
  • Keep skills up-to-date for all clinical duties you might be required to undertake.
  • Undertake the monitoring of vaccine fridge temperatures and notify any reading above normal limits.
  • When requested ensure the following are stocked/filled with all necessary equipment:-

Doctors Emergency Bag, Suction Bag, Anaphylaxis Box, Oxygen Bottles, Crash Bag, Difib, Glucometer and any equipment as required.

  • To keep the Doctors’ rooms stocked as required.
  • To ensure all broken/damaged instruments are returned to the appropriate place and a log kept.
  • To compile stock orders as necessary with relevant staff members, and keep adequate stock levels and that all staff are aware of where such items are stored. Examples of orders to be placed Wardles – Sterile packs, General Stock – minor ops, Needles & Syringe stock order.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

  • Participate in monitoring and audit of various aspects of the nursing service as required.
  • Adhere to the highest standards of clinical care.
  • Follow practice protocols, professional codes of conduct and local policies.
  • Take responsibility and accountability for own actions.
  • Seek GP or nursing support if unsure about the management of a patient.
  • Be prepared to undergo clinical supervision.
  • Contribute to clinical meetings, particularly using significant event audit.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • To carry out NVQ Training.
  • Contribute to nurse and clinical meetings as required.
  • Take part in the annual performance appraisal system and undertake such training as is deemed necessary by the practice.
  • Keep up-to-date with issues relating to primary care and job role, staff, patients and carers if required.
  • Perform other tasks as required by the GPs or manager which are reasonable and in line with the principles of this job description.
  • Ensure adequate professional indemnity insurance is in place.
