Job summary

Applications are invited for a part-time healthcare assistant (HCA) at Gordon Street Surgery. We are a friendly practice with approximately 10,600 patients. The successful applicant will have good clinical, IT and interpersonal skills and be willing to upskill according to need.

Emis trained is essential.

Previous HCA experience in a GP Practice is essential.

The role is for 24 hours over three days, Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Main duties of the job

In summary, the role involves:

  • Blood pressure checks
  • Dressings/wound checks
  • Ear syringes
  • ECGs
  • Lifestyle advice, including for pre-diabetes
  • Phlebotomy
  • Smoking cessation
  • Specific injections covered by a PSD, eg flu vaccinations, B12
  • SMI physical health assessments
  • Diabetic foot examinations

This list is not exhaustive and all duties are subject to appropriate training.

Professionally relates to Senior Nurse

Job Summary

  • To provide health care assistant services to patients of the practice including treatment, screening and advice within the professional competence of the post holder (extra training will be provided before new duties are undertaken).

Duties

  • To support the clinical function of the nursing team in promoting and maintaining a high standard of individualised care for the patient.

  • To carry out duties delegated and supervised by a qualified nurse, to include blood pressure, smoking cessation, ECGs, weight management, wound care, venepuncture etc, ensuring that he/she carries out any delegated duty within their range, scope and skill.
  • To work in a team spirited and supportive manner.
  • To assist the nursing team to ensure that standards of care are maintained.
  • To care for patients according to the individualised plan of care, respecting patients rights to privacy, dignity and choice, adhering to safeguarding and equality and diversity policy.
  • To provide high quality care and support for those patients and carers under the care of the nursing team.
  • To adhere to policy for universal infection control.
  • To maintain accurate records keeping in line with the Surgerys policies and to ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  • To assist in ensuring that all equipment is safe and adequately maintained, that stocks of all types are stored safely and are economically used to meet the needs of the patient's care, and report faulty equipment to appropriate person (senior nurse, practice manager or caretaker).
  • To promote a high standard of customer care through positive attitude and professional behaviour reflecting good practice even in times of stress and pressure of work.
  • To be aware of personal preferences, cultural and religious beliefs of patients and staff disregarding any form of prejudices.
  • To carry out any additional duties as may be reasonably delegated by the nursing team, within their range, scope and skill.
  • To be familiar and comply with procedures for fire, manual handling, health and safety (COSHH), CPR, infection control and challenging behaviours.
  • To attend in-service training or external courses and relevant meetings as part of his/her personal and professional development.
  • To work within QoF guidelines as appropriate.
  • To maintain stock rotation.
  • To have phlebotomy experience.
  • GP Practice experience is essential.
