Market Surgery is excited to be recruiting a Medical Receptionist to join our busy surgery. An opportunity has arisen to join our team of 11 medical receptionists
Market Surgery is a conveniently based location in the heart of Wath-Upon-Dearne with excellent transport links to the surrounding area including Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and Sheffield
Receptionists play a fundamental role in Primary Care Services. As the first member of staff that a patient will encounter their journey of patient centred care starts with you.
27.5 hours per week over 5 days
Shift patterns are a mixture of 07:45 - 13:15 and 13:00 - 18:30
Main duties of the job
First and foremost it is vital that patients receive a warm, friendly, courteous and efficient service at all times and we expect all prospective candidates to exemplify these characteristics.
The role of the Medical Receptionist is varied and undeniably challenging yet fulfilling. Our receptionists undertake a wide variety of duties which reach far beyond the booking of appointments. Such duties you will be undertaking are:
- Patient Registration
- Care Navigation - the signposting of patients to a variety of different care providers and clinicians
- Complaint resolution
- Ordering patient medications
- Ensuring patients get the right care, from the right clinician at the right time - including in emergency situations
- Updating patient records (under the guidance of a clinician where applicable)
- Offering Online Patient Access

The purpose of the role is to:
- Offer general assistance to the Practice team and project a positive and friendly image to patients and other visitors, either in person or via the telephone.
- Receive, assist and direct patients in accessing the appropriate service or healthcare professional in a courteous, efficient and effective way. Navigate patients to the appropriate care service.
- Undertake a variety of administrative duties to assist in the smooth running of the Practice including the provision of clerical support to clinical staff and other members of the Practice team
- Facilitate effective communication between patients, members of the primary health care team, secondary care and other associated healthcare agencies
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities to be undertaken by members of the Practice Reception team may include any or all of the items in the following list. Duties may be varied from time to time under the direction of the Receptionist Team Leader, dependent on current and evolving Practice workload and staffing levels. There is also an expectation that the role will have crossover with the administration team:
- Opening up/locking-up of Practice premises and maintaining security in accordance with Practice protocols
- Maintaining and monitoring the Practice appointments system
- Processing telephone requests for appointments, visits and telephone consultations and ensuring callers are directed to the appropriate healthcare professional
- Taking messages and passing on information
- Filing and retrieving paperwork
- Processing repeat prescriptions in accordance with Practice guidelines
- Computer data entry/data allocation and collation; processing and recording information in accordance with Practice procedures
- Initiating contact with and responding to requests from patients, other team member and associated healthcare agencies and providers
- Clearing and re-stock consulting rooms as required
- Providing clerical assistance, including word/data processing, filing, photocopying and scanning
- Keeping the reception area, notice-boards and leaflet dispensers tidy and free from obstructions and clutter
