Job responsibilities
MAIN PURPOSE:Responsible
to the Practice Manager for the smooth and efficient running and manning
levels, of both Docking and Massingham dispensaries.
- Liaise with drug representatives
- Prepare
and dispense medicines accurately, safely and promptly under the Doctors
overall supervision.

Managerial Responsibilities
1. Overall Manager of both
Docking & Massingham dispensaries.
2. Liaising with Drug Companies
& Representatives to ascertain cost effective drugs and products.
3. Responsible for Annual
Stocktaking of Docking & Massingham drugs.
4. Updating of dispensary
protocols and standard operating procedures.
5. To ensure that both Docking
& Massingham dispensaries are adequately manned and that a monthly roster
is given to the Practice Manager showing manning level of both surgeries.
6.
To ensure the dispensary staff are kept updated on
dispensary matters and attend seminars and training courses as required.
7. To ensure that dispensing
staff at both Massingham & Docking surgeries complies with Government
Policy regarding the recording and safeguarding of Controlled Drugs and that a
Controlled Drugs Register is maintained.
8. To ensure that the
dispensing staff are aware of the Government Policy regarding prescription
charges & exemptions. That practice staff who sign for patients will be
held liable for exemptions claimed unlawfully.
Dispensing
1. To dispense to patients,
with the aid of the computer, medicines as required by the Doctors in the
Practice.
2. Not to dispense medicines to
unauthorised persons without the Doctors consent.
3. To dispense and record
Private Prescriptions with their payments.
4. To receive, record and
dispense Repeat medicine requests. (Note: With regard to patients whose
prescription review date has passed, a small quantity only of medicine should
be issued, sufficient to sustain them until a review by their Doctor can be
made).
5. To ensure that the Register
of Controlled Drugs (CDs) is kept totally up-to-date at all times (i.e. all
receipts and issues to be recorded and checked with a Doctor.
6. To collect NHS Prescription
Charges, when appropriate, and maintain a record of patients who owe money.
7. To liaise with the Doctors
regarding requests from patients for medicines not on Repeat Prescription.
8. To print Prescriptions for
items used by the District Nurses and to order items required by them.
9. To deal with
Dispensary-related patient enquiries when necessary.
10. To prepare drugs for
distribution to outlying areas.
11. To ensure that the
appropriate security measures are maintained of both the dispensary and medical
storeroom whilst on duty. That any breaches of security are brought to the
Practice Managers attention ASAP.

Security
1. Report all
breaches of security to the practice manager as soon as practicable sothat he/she can investigate.
2. To ensure that adequate security measures for the
safeguarding of Controlled Drugs are in place at Massingham and Docking
surgeries.
3.
Together with the Practice Manager, ensure that the security of the dispensing
areas at Massingham and Docking surgeries are adequate.
4.
To ensure that all dispensing staff are aware of the security measures to be
taken, to enable the security of the dispensary areas at all times, both during
the working day and when the premises are closed.
5.
Any breaches in security procedures are to be reported Immediately, to either a Doctor or the Practice Manager.
Stock Control
1. To maintain adequate stock
control with the aid of the computer.
2. To utilise stock in date
order to minimise wastage caused by time-expired items.
3. To check drugs delivered
each day against invoices, to enter on computer and pass invoices to the
Practice Manager for payment as required.
Drug Budget
1. To re-order supplies of
drugs from Wholesalers each day and as necessary by Transfer Order via Medical
Sales Representatives.
2. To ensure that agreed
amounts of drug bonus are received by the Practice and that the Practice
Manager is kept informed of these for accounting purposes.
3. Work closely with the
prescribing team at the CCG to ensure optimum medications are prescribed.
Medical Representatives
1. To liaise with Medical
Representatives and negotiate cost of drugs and bonuses.
Other Duties
1.
To ensure the cleanliness of the Dispensary and
equipment at all times.
2. To maintain the smooth
running of printers in the Dispensary and ensure that the toners are not low
3. To carry out the checking
and counting of prescriptions each month for submission to the Prescription
Pricing Authority.
4. When on late shift, at the
end of evening surgery, to count till money and ensure that the Drug Cupboard
is locked.

judgement, resourcefulness, common sense and local knowledge to respond to
patients enquiries and requests.
