Job summary
The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) plays a key role in supporting the clinical team in the delivery of high-quality care to patients within primary care. Working under the supervision of registered clinicians, the HCA undertakes a range of clinical, administrative, and supportive duties within their level of competence and training, helping to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centred services.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the Healthcare Assistant include supporting clinicians with patient care by carrying out delegated clinical tasks such as taking observations, performing health checks, phlebotomy, woundcare, immunisations, suture removal, ear irrigation and ECGs.
The role also involves maintaining accurate clinical records, supporting infection prevention and control, managing and ordering clinical stock, preparing clinical rooms, and providing a high standard of care and communication to patients while working within practice policies and professional boundaries.

The HCA will undertake the following duties:

Temperature

Height, weight, and BMI

Phlebotomy

ECG recording

New patient health checks
-
NHS Health Checks

Wound care and dressings
-
Removal of sutures and clips

Urinalysis and preparation of samples

Venepuncture and specimen handling
-
Supporting chronic disease management clinics (e.g. diabetes, hypertension) as delegated

Ear irrigation
Immunisations (B12)

Assisting clinicians during procedures as appropriate
Stock Management & Supplies

Monitoring and maintaining clinical stock levels to ensure adequate supplies at all times

Ordering clinical and non-clinical supplies in line with practice procedures and agreed budgets

Checking deliveries, rotating stock, and ensuring items are stored safely and appropriately

Monitoring expiry dates and removing out-of-date stock promptly

Reporting shortages, issues with supplies, or equipment faults to the appropriate lead

Supporting cost-effective stock usage and minimising waste
