Job summary

We are looking for a keen person with a good eye for detail who would like to develop a career in healthcare to join our dispensary team. This new roles has been created as our practice has expanded.

Main duties of the job

The role of a dispenser will include dispensing medications in line with prescriptions, ensuring good customer service for those needing medications and supporting clinical staff in prescribing by advising what medication are available. The role also includes ordering medications in line with practice procedures and ensuring correct information about what is dispensed is recorded. Full training can be provided, which would include working towards the successful completion of a NVQ level 2 equivalent qualification. We have a history of developing colleagues in this role and in their careers. Apprenticeships would also be considered.

The hours of work required are 9am until 1pm on Tuesday, 8.30pm till 5pm on Wednesday and Thursday (1 hour lunch break) and 2pm until 6pm on Friday.

Job description

Job responsibilities

MAIN PURPOSE OF POST:

After training the postholder will be expected to:

Provide a high quality dispensing service.

Help ensure that the use of dispensary resources are fully optimised and that the administrative systems of the dispensary operate effectively and efficiently.

Assist the Dispensary Manager as directed.

  1. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST:

a)Provide a professional, prompt and efficient service for all patients.

b) Follow Practice procedures in ensuring safe and accountable dispensing of drugs.

c) Ensure polite and helpful customer service.

d) Ensure efficiency of stock control, date rotation, re-ordering supplies as directed by the Dispensary Manager.

e) Follow all dispensary security arrangements in line with the Practice protocols, including security and correct administration of the controlled drugs cupboard.

f) Process prescriptions in line with Practice procedures, using computerised system as directed.

g) Ensure the safe disposal of drugs and sharps, in line with Practice procedures.

h) Ensure the correct procedure is followed with regard to receipt of monies, including taking payments for prescription items and cashing up.

i) Undertake audits as required by the Practice.

j) Liaise with members of the primary health care team, as required, and communicate information to them via the systems set up within the Practice.

2. HEALTH AND SAFETY:

Adhere to the Practices Health and Safety Policy and maintain a safe working environment.

  1. GENERAL

    a) The postholder will be required to attend training courses commensurate with his/her development and in accordance with the needs of the individual and the Practice.

    b) The postholder will undertake in house training under the direction of the Dispensary Manager.

    c) The postholder should notify the Line Manager of any concerns relating to the above responsibilities.

    d) The postholder will be required to take part in the appraisal system.

    e) The postholder will be required to attend relevant lunch time meetings and remuneration will be made for this in line with Practice policy (e.g. staff meetings, working group meetings).

    f) Any information to which the postholder has access with regard to patients or staff must be treated in the strictest confidence.

    g) The postholder will be expected to provide cover for other dispensary staff during periods of leave/absence. This will be discussed and agreed in advance.

    h) This job description covers the main duties which the post holder is expected to undertake. These duties may be revised from time to time, in consultation with the post holder.
