CLEANERS JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: CLEANER
REPORTS TO: PRACTICE MANAGER
HOURS: 12.5 hours per week
Job Summary:
To keep the Surgery in a clean and orderly manner.
Job responsibilities:
Supervisory Responsibilities
- to ensure that there are sufficient operatives on site, especially during periods of sickness and holiday absence
- ensure that all cleaning operatives complete mandatory training
- ensure that there are sufficient supplies to undertake the cleaning functions and order as necessary
- to ensure that all duties as listed below are undertaken by the cleaning operative team
- undertake regular audits to comply with infection control and standards of hygiene regulations
- liaise with the Practice Manager as required
DAILY JOBS
- Vacuum all areas of the surgery that have been in use
- Empty bins and paper shredder into the correctly coloured bags:
- Clinical Waste – Yellow Sacks (full sacks to be left outside in wheelie bin)
- Household Waste – Orange Sacks (to be used sparingly)
- Shredding Material – Black Sacks
- Clean all sinks and working surfaces that have been in use
- Clean and disinfect all toilets
- Damp dust all surfaces that have been in use
- Tidy rooms ready for use
- Notify Practice Manager of any breakages or hazards
- Wash up items in consulting rooms and the Common Room
- Clean worktop surfaces in kitchen
- Wash floors in treatment/consulting rooms
- Check towels and replace as necessary, tea towels to be changed daily
- Maintain supplies of cleaning materials
- Turn off lights, set alarm and lock surgery when leaving
- Polishing furniture and reception desk
- Clean entrance doors
WEEKLY JOBS
- Clean telephones with cleaner provided
- Check stock of cleaning materials
- Defrost fridge & clean any kitchen cupboards that need attention
- Spot clean any carpet stains
- Put rubbish out for collection on correct day
MONTHLY JOBS
- Clean inside of any windows that need attention
- Check and wash plastic toys
ANNUAL JOBS
- Liaise with PM regarding carpet cleaning (contractors used)
- Arrange “spring” cleaning schedule
Undertake any other cleaning tasks that may occasionally be required, prior notification will be given and overtime paid at the hourly rate.

- In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately
- In the performance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the Practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential
- Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the Practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.
Health & Safety:
The post-holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others’ health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy, to include:
- Using personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines
- Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks
- Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
- Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards
- Reporting potential risks identified.
- Ensuring that only approved cleaning substances are used within the Practice.
- Ensuring that COSHH Data Sheets are available for all substances as appropriate especially those with hazard symbols.
- Ensuring that cleaning substances are returned to the cleaning store cupboard immediately after use and prior to staff using the building. Cleaning materials and substances are not to be stored under sinks, on work surfaces, window ledges etc as this may result in inappropriate use by untrained staff
