Job summary

Job Summary:-

To dispense medication to patients safely and in accordance with regulations

Participate in the Dispensing Services Quality Scheme (DSQS)

Main duties of the job

Issuing prescriptions following standard operating procedures (SOP's)

Dispensing of acute and repeat medication

Handing out dispensed medication to patients and collecting charges where applicable

Ensuring patient declaration on reverse of prescription is completed correctly

Understanding of drug tariff and endorsing of prescriptions

Correct disposal of returned or unused medication

To fully observe legal requirements relevant to a dispensing practice including correct handling, recording, issuing and disposal of controlled drugs

To ensure that all stock is kept at the correct temperature and check/record fridge temperatures daily

To dispense prescriptions within a 48 hour turnaround period and keep owed items to a minimum

Correct rotation of stock and regular date checking to prevent items going out of date on the shelf

Transportation of dispensed medication between Carlton/Riccall branch surgeries

Provide a high level of patient care

Other tasks as reasonably required

About us

We have a small team of 5 qualified dispensary staff working at our 2 branch surgeries. All dispensing is currently done at our new purpose build dispensary within Carlton branch surgery. Dispensed prescriptions for our Riccall patients are transported to our Riccall surgery for collection.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To follow practice policies and standard operating procedures (SOP,s)

To dispense medication safely and in accordance with regulations

Participate in the Dispensing Services Quality Scheme (DSQS)

Issue repeat prescriptions

Dispense acute and repeat medication

Deal with patient enquiries

Liaise with other professions both internally and externally

Handing out of dispensed medication to patient or their representative

Collecting of prescription charge if applicable and ensuring the back of the prescription is fully completed and signed by the patient or their representative

Daily cashing up of the till and submission of prescription money to the accounts clerk

Endorsing of dispensed prescriptions, making use of the Drug Tariff

Correct disposal of returned unused medicines

To fully observe legal requirements relevant to a dispensing practice including correctly handling, recording, issuing and disposal of controlled drugs

To fulfil patients orders and dispense within a 48 hour turn around period, keeping owed items to a minimum

Ordering medication from the wholesaler(s)

Checking goods in when received from wholesaler(s)

Returning incorrect items to the wholesaler(s)

Stocking shelves, refrigerators and other storage areas. Rotating stock to prevent out of date wastage

Ensure that all drug safety alerts and notices are acted upon in a timely manner

To ensure that all stock is kept at the correct temperature, check/record fridge temperatures daily

Disposal of returned unused medicines following SOP

Reporting any out of date CD,s to the Dispensary Manager so that an expert witness can be arranged as per SOP

Request authorisation from practice pharmacist or GP for any acute medications or new medications on behalf of patient

Participate in DSQS work including audit and DRUM review where appropriate

Maintaining a clean and tidy dispensary ensuring all dispensary equipment is in good working order

Check shelves for uncollected medication for follow SOP for reporting/returning stock

Transportation of dispensed medication between Carlton and Riccall branch surgeries

To work flexibly within the team and to provide cover as necessary at all 3 Beech Tree Surgery sites

Taking responsibility for own professional development, learning and performance

To ensure that you complete all mandatory training

To attend meetings

Adherence to guidelines in relation to information governance and confidentiality

To comply with all statutory and regulatory obligations

  • NVQ level 2 in Dispensing/Pharmacy Services
  • English & Maths GCSE or equivalent
  • Strong computer and communication skills
  • Customer service experience

Desirable

  • Minimum of 2 years experience of working in a dispensary
  • Experience of working in the NHS and/or general practice
  • Knowledge of Emis computer system
  • Understanding of health and safety issues
  • Knowledge of DSQS
  • Demonstrate an understanding of audit
