Main duties of the job

Our nurses are responsible for healthcare management for our patients, encouraging and enabling patients to manage their various conditions and to live as well as they can.

About us

Our team includes our clinical staff, GP partners, nurses, a TNA, HCAs and includes a pharmacist and paramedic from our PCN, and on the non clinical side includes admin, reception, secretarial and management. We work together and socialise together. Our patients are our focus

Job description

Job responsibilities

Main Purpose of Job

To undertake all duties delegated to the Practice nurse by the Doctors following prior agreement and training.

Accountabilities

1. Undertake the following procedures without the patient having first seen a doctor:-

a) Dressings

b) Chronic Disease Management

c) Ear syringing

d) Repeat cervical smears

e) Removal of sutures/Clip

f) Changing of ring pessaries

g) Repeat long-term injections, ie. Hydroxocoblamin.

h) Urine testing

i) NHS holiday vaccinations and general travel advice.

j) Annual influenza vaccinations

k) ECG

l) Nebulising patients as needed

m) Contraception advice/clinic

2. Full nursing responsibility, after the patient has first been seen by a Doctor, for the following procedures:-

a) HVS

b) ring pessary insertions

c) primary immunisations

d) assisting with Minor Ops

e) such other procedures as are from time to time agreed

3. Ensure that adequate stocks of routine vaccines are maintained in correct refrigerated conditions and stock control system is maintained accurately.

Stock used is recorded on daily basis.

4. To be responsible for proper sterilisation of instruments although we mainly use pre packed disposable equipment.

5. Support Lead Nurse in Infection Control

6. Supervision and training of HCAs/Nursing Associate

7. To be responsible for record keeping and relevant paperwork;

a) completion of cervical cytology test forms and recording these to enable HCAs to search and process results

b) ensuring that all vaccines are recorded and messages passed to nurses clerk to do prescriptions and claims.

c) ensuring stock levels of vaccines and equipment are kept at reasonable levels and informing nurses clerk when stock levels go below what is required for 1 month so she can do her monthly order around the 15th of each month (weekly orders for baby vaccines).

d) ensuring all consultations and procedures carried out and are documented and coded correctly on patient records

e) all nurses protocols to be checked annually and kept accurately and up to date.

f) emergency boxes to be checked and kept up to date.

Experience

Essential

  • 1) Basic Computer Skills
  • 2) Ability to communicate with patients/doctors
  • 3) Good Organisational skills.
  • 4) The ability to keep accurate records & ensure targets are met.
  • 5) The ability to manage stock control & ordering of vaccines
  • 6) The ability to work unsupervised.

Desirable

  • 1) Previous experience in a GP Practice.
  • 2) Previous experience as Nurse/Baby Clinic Clerk
  • 3) The ability to manage stock control & ordering of vaccines
  • 4) The ability to prioritise in response to conflicting demands.
  • 5) Self Motivation and flexibility.
  • 6) The ability to deal with day to day problems that may arise including complaints from unhappy patients.
  • 7) Good communication skills.
  • 8) Experience in systmone computer package would be advantageous.
  • 9) The ability to work unsupervised.
