Job summary

The purpose of this role is the effective delivery and management of the prescribing process in our GP Surgery.

The Pharmacy Technician, working alongside trained prescribing administrators, will lead improvements to maximise safe, cost effective best practice in prescribing to improve the quality of patient care.

The Pharmacy Technician will help patients to get the best from their medicines by switching medications to agreed and approved protocols, improving repeat prescription processes, including promotion of repeat dispensing and online ordering, minimising clinical risk and aiming to reduce wasted medicines.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Pharmacy Technician will include:-

  • Managing and overseeing the prescribing function at the GP Surgery.
  • Supervising the Patient Services Team Administrators in their prescribing duties.
  • Promotion of electronic repeat dispensing and online ordering.
  • Assisting in the appropriate drug monitoring and management of high risk drugs.

About us

Glenlyn Medical Centre has a patient population of approximately 22,000 patients. The surgery is based across two sites in East Molesey and Thames Ditton, Surrey. There is also a small surgery in Woking, Surrey with approximately 3,500 patients.

Glenlyn Medical Centre is a large, friendly GP practice. The GP team work alongside a multi-disciplinary team including Pharmacists, Paramedics, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Paediatric Nurses and Health Care Assistants. The clinical team are supported by a large administrative team.

Glenlyn Medical Centre is a family friendly organisation and offers flexible working. All sites have good commuter links and we have free onsite car parking.

Job responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Manage and oversee the prescribing function at the surgery.
  • Supervise the patient service team administrators in their prescribing duties.
  • Promotion of electronic repeat dispensing and online ordering.
  • Carrying out medicines switches in line with practice and CCG agreed protocols reviewing patients records, amending records and informing patients.
  • Assist in the appropriate drug monitoring and management of high risk drugs.
  • Carrying out medicines optimisation tasks including effective medicine administration (e.g. checking inhaler technique), supporting medication reviews and medicine reconciliation.
  • Housekeeping whilst in patient records, e.g. dose optimisation and medicines synchronisation.
  • Improve prescribing processes in practice.
  • Use and maintain information systems and databases relevant to the position including incident reporting, medicines optimisation, prescribing data, cost savings and patient outcomes.
  • Support initiatives for antimicrobial stewardship to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing locally.
  • Working closing with GPs, Business Manager and Clinical Pharmacists.
  • Participate in practice meetings, patient participation groups and other meetings to improve engagement of the role of pharmacy technician within the surgery.
  • Liaise with other relevant stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Handle function specific information, which may be sensitive, complex or confidential and appropriately recording, transferring and/or coordinating such information in accordance with Data Protection Act; Caldicott Guidelines and the Confidentiality Code of Conduct.
  • To be responsible for the organisation, planning of own workload to meet set deadlines.
  • To utilise GP practice clinical systems to conduct prescribing audits (EMIS).
  • To action workload from Footfall.
  • To undertake, participate and share the outcomes of clinical audits to facilitate improvement and changes in practice.
  • To ensure that all major MHRA drug alerts, where appropriate and within level of competence, are acted upon within the practice over an appropriate time frame and to advise on any medication changes that occur as a result.
  • To assist in the monitoring of prescribing expenditure and liaison with Business Manager and Clinical Pharmacists.
  • To undertake learning and development to ensure the required knowledge and skills for practice based work.
  • To carry out other duties which are appropriate to the skills and competencies of the post holder and grade of the post as the priorities of the service change.

  • Professional Registration with GPhC
  • BTEC/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent with pharmaceutical sciences
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Experience of working as a qualified, registered pharmacy technician in primary care, community or hospital pharmacy.
