Job summary

To assist medical personnel in the care of practice patients, to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education.

The practice will consider applications from Practice Nurses wishing to work between 16 and 37.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

THE CASTLE MEDICAL CENTRE

JOB TITLE: Practice Nurse (Treatment Room)

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POST: To assist medical personnel in the care of practice patients, to include treatment, preventative care, screening and patient education.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. To provide assessment, screening treatment services and health education advice

(i) Organise and co-ordinate the provision of nursing services to the practice to include the delegation of duties to other practice nursing staff as appropriate.

(ii) Provide nursing treatments to patients to include: dressings, child immunisation, travel vaccinations, injections, blood pressure checks, ECG, weight and diet advice, assisting with coil fittings, general First Aid and emergency care to agreed protocols.

(iii) Prepare for and assist the doctors with minor surgery.

(iv) Maintain the treatment rooms and all equipment within, being aware of infection control and all aspects of Health and Safety.

(v) Understand and safely use specialist equipment, e.g. ECG machine, nebuliser, spirometer and audiometer, defibrillator.

2. Treatment room supplies and equipment

Ensure the maintenance of equipment and stock levels relating to patient care is available in all rooms.

3. Pathological specimens and investigatory procedures

Undertake the collection of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs and smears

4. Administrative and professional responsibilities

Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team.

(i) Ensure accurate notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes.

(ii) Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care.

(iii) Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports.

(iv) Attend and participate in all practice meetings as required.

Undertake audits in relation to health promotion and screening as needed.

Ensure accurate completion of any necessary documentation associated with income generation involving use of written and computer held records.

5. Education, Training & Professional Development

Maintain continued education by attendance at courses and study days as deemed useful or necessary for professional development.

Participate in the education and training of students of all disciplines and the induction of all members of practice staff.

Fulfil PREP requirements as laid down by UKCC, maintaining continued education by attendance at study days and courses deemed necessary for professional development.

6. Liaison

(i) Maintain effective liaison with other agencies and staff concerned with patient care and with all other disciplines within the practice, with appropriate regard to confidentiality.

(ii) Attend relevant Practice Nurse Association meetings.
