Job summary

Thirsk Doctors Surgery are delighted to be hiring an additional Healthcare Assistant. The successful candidate will be responsible for undertaking a wide range of Healthcare Assistant duties and the provision of general support to the multidisciplinary team.

We are committed to staff development and will support training needs of the successful candidate and ensure work shadowing and induction is carried out with our friendly team and training providers.

Main duties of the job

To support the practice nursing and administrative teams in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education whilst also supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis.

Hours per week - 16 hours per week - with the possibility to increase in due course

Pay rate from £9.70 per hour dependent on experience

Reports to - Practice Manager, Nurse Manager, Practice Nurses

Closing date - 31st December 2021

Primary responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Undertake new patient health checks
  • Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
  • Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximitery, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately
  • Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
  • Nurses phone in- advising patients of test results
  • Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
  • Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
  • Carry out BMI checks as directed
  • Act as a chaperone as required
  • Undertake venepuncture, attend training
  • Administer flu, covid, pneumococcal and shingles vaccinations and attend the training
  • Carry out ECGs as requested
  • Urinalysis
  • Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
  • Deliver smoking cessation clinics and attend the training
  • Dopplars
  • Provide support during minor operations as required
  • Following agreed clinical protocols with referrals to advanced nurse practitioner and GP's
  • Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked, clean and tidy and prepared for each session, maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GP's
  • Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance, recording and monitoring of fridge temperatures
  • Ordering stock from suppliers when required, stock checks
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisation’s IPC policy
  • Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
  • Partake in mandatory elearning and face to face training

Secondary responsibilities

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Healthcare Assistant may be requested to:

  • Participate in practice audit as directed by management
  • Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
  • Support and participate in shared learning within the organisation
  • Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota when required
  • Attendance of practice meetings, significant event meetings and staff training events
  • Co-operate with annual appraisal meetings and interim performance reviews
