Job summary

We are currently seeking a committed, enthusiastic Nursing Associate to join our forward thinking team at Westbury Group Practice.

The successful candidate will work with a range of health and care professionals and will be supervised by our nurses. You will be part of the team responsible for helping people manage long term conditions, health screening, family planning, running vaccination programmes and providing wound care to the Practice population.

If you have recently qualified as a nursing associate or are due to qualify we will support your practice consolidation and work with you to help you develop even more knowledge, skills and experience

Main duties of the job

The nursing associate will act in the best interests of patients, putting them first and providing nursing care that is person-centred, safe and compassionate. They will act professionally at all times and use their knowledge and experience to make evidence-based decisions and solve problems. They will recognise and work within the limitations of their competence and are responsible for their actions.

The nursing associate will act in accordance with the Code: Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates, and fulfil all registration requirements.

Work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to meet the needs of patients, support the delivery of policy and procedure and improve our service delivery.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support patients to improve and maintain their mental, physical, behavioural health and wellbeing
  • Be actively involved in the prevention of and protection against disease and ill health; understanding and applying the principles of health promotion, protection and improvement and the prevention of ill health when engaging with patients.
  • Provide information and support for patients and their families to make informed choices
  • Contribute to the ongoing assessment of the patients’ needs, recognise when a patient’s condition has improved or deteriorated and refer to members of the multi-disciplinary team as necessary.
  • Responsible for identifying and acting on safeguarding concerns
  • Prioritise and manage own workload, delegate to other when appropriate
  • Promote health through the delivery of national immunisation programmes
  • Accurately measure weight and height, calculate BMI and recognise healthy ranges and clinically significant low/high readings
  • Use manual techniques and devices to record and interpret vital signs
  • Undertake venepuncture and routine ECG monitoring
  • Manage sputum, urine, stool and vomit samples, collecting, interpreting and reporting as appropriate
  • Administer basic mental health first aid
  • Identify and manage skin irritations, rashes and breakdown
  • Monitor wounds and undertake wound care using appropriate evidence-based techniques
  • Take and be able to identify normal peak flow and oximetry measurements
  • Manage inhalation and nebuliser devices
  • Use aseptic non-touch technique
  • Infection control – use standard precautions, effective hand hygiene techniques, effective decontamination of equipment and the environment techniques and safely handle and dispose of waste
  • Undertake accurate drug calculations
  • Professionally accountable for the safe administration of medicines
  • Administer medication vial oral, topical, inhalation, subcutaneous and intramuscular routes
  • Respond to adverse and abnormal reactions to medications given
  • Undertake ear assessments
  • On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits

Administration and professional responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively using a range of skills and strategies with colleagues and patients at all stages of their life and with a range of mental, physical, cognitive and behavioural health challenges
  • Recognise and report any situations, behaviours or errors that could result in poor care outcomes
  • Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team
  • Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate
  • To maintain comprehensive, accurate and contemporaneous computerised records of all consultations and contacts with patients and when appropriate written or printed records.
  • Ensure QOF and Arden’s templates are completed accurately.
  • Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation associated with patient health care and registration with the practice
  • Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports and audit
  • Restocking and maintenance of clinical areas and consulting rooms
  • Attend and participate in practice/nursing meetings as required
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within and external to the practice.
  • If it is necessary to expand the role to include additional responsibilities, full training will be given.

Training and personal development:

  • Training requirements will be monitored by yearly appraisal and will be in accordance with practice requirements. Personal development will be encouraged and supported by the Practice. It is the individuals’ responsibility to remain up to date with recent developments in line with NMC Revalidation.
  • Participate in an annual appraisal as per the practices appraisals policy
  • Take responsibility for continuous self-reflection, seeking and responding to support and feedback to develop professional knowledge and skills
  • Keep up to date with pertinent health-related policy and work with the practice team to consider the impact and strategies for implementation
  • Participate in the education and training of students of all disciplines and the induction of all members of the practice team where appropriate.
  • The post holder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.
  • If it is necessary to expand the role to include additional responsibilities, full training will be given.
