Job summary

We have over 13,400 patients and work from purpose built premises in the town of Droitwich. We have a strong educational culture and host a range of training roles including Nurse and Physician Associate Training with the University of Worcester. We are also an active research practice with the NIHR.

Our Practice Nurse Team includes 4 Practice Nurses and 5 HCAs.

Main duties of the job

Core duties include;

  • Focus on chronic disease management
  • Vaccinations and immunisations and Travel clinics
  • Cytology
  • Minor injuries and wound management
  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team,
  • Active contribution to clinical and operational improvement within the Practice
  • Active involvement in multi-disciplinary teaching and training, research, QOF management, clinical audit and the delivery of enhanced services.
  • Support and supervision of healthcare students and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals in training.

About us

Our high performing practice operates from a modern purpose built surgery, located in leafy residential Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire within easy reach of Birmingham and the M5.

With 5 partners, 6 Associate GPS, Clinical Pharmacists, an FCP and a Nursing team of 8 , we manage13,400 patients and are a growing, ambitious and forward-looking practice.

With a strong interest in education and research, we teach undergraduate yrs 1-4 Medical students from Birmingham Medical School, host Physician Associate and Nursing students from the University of Worcester and train FY2 and GP Registrars ST1,2 & 3. We are an active research practice with the NIHR Clinical Research Network.

We host a multidisciplinary team of Cardiologist, Neurologist, Counsellors, District Nurses, Mental Health Workers, Midwives, Physiotherapists, Social Prescribers, Substance Misuse Counsellor, Sonographer and Retinal Screening services on site.

We use EMIS Web and use EPSR2 for electronic prescriptions.

JOB DESCRIPTION:Practice Nurse

Reporting to: Nurse Manager and Lead Partner for Nursing Team

Job summary: To work in a nursing team to assist in the clinical, administrative, teaching and research work of the practice.

KEY TASKS

To provide nursing services to the practice population by assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care, within the NMC code of conduct.

1. Provide nursing treatments to patients in participation with General Practitioners and other members of the Primary Health Care Team.

2. Provide general and specific health screenings to the practice patients, family planning, diabetes care, womens health, including vaccinations and immunisations, travel health, respiratory care, plus respiratory and cardiovascular disease if appropriate. To operate autonomously, in line with additional training and experience, and with consultation or referral to general practitioners, as necessary.

3. To be involved in the preparation and implementation of the practices annual flu campaign.

4. Advise patients on general health care, minor ailments and minor injuries with referral to General Practitioners as necessary.

5. To take a lead role, with the assistance of others, for certain patient groups.

6. To assist in the development of practice and clinical protocols for the surgery team.

Treatment room supplies and equipment

In conjunction with the Health Care Assistants and the rest of the team, ensure the maintenance of equipment and stock levels relating to patient care.

Pathological specimens and investigatory procedures

Undertake the collection of pathological specimens including intravenous blood samples, swabs, smears, etc. Perform any investigatory procedures requested by the General Practitioners.

Administrative and professional responsibilities

1. Assist in the organisation and co-ordination of nursing services for the practice to include the delegation of duties to other members of the practice nursing team as appropriate.

2. Participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team.

3. Ensure accurate notes of all consultations and treatments are recorded in the patients notes on the computer. Written notes to be kept according to practice policy.

4. Ensure accurate completion of all necessary documentation (either on computer or paper) as appropriate, associated with patient health care and registration with the practice.

5. Ensure collection and maintenance of statistical information required for regular and ad hoc reports.

6. Attend and participate in practice meetings and training sessions as required.

7. Assist in the formulation of practice philosophy, strategy and policy for the nursing team.

8. With others, maintain a notice board in the waiting area designated for patient health care education.

Education and training of students and practice staff

Participate in the education and training of medical students and assist in the induction of members of practice staff as required. To take on the role of mentor to colleagues if necessary.

Liaison

Maintain effective liaison with other agencies and staff concerned with patient care and with all other disciplines within the practice, with appropriate regard to confidentiality.

Professional Development

Maintain continued education by attendance at courses and study days as deemed useful or necessary for professional and practice development, including diabetes, cervical cytology, respiratory, and coronary heart disease if appropriate. There is an expectation that at appointment some of this training will be already completed. To engage actively in the process of appraisal.
