Job summary

A new opportunity for a Health Care Assistant has arisen at North Swindon Practice. We are a busy Training Practice with a friendly Clinical Team, offering support and continued training.

About us

North Swindon Practice (Home Ground Surgery and Crossroads Surgery) has circa. 20,000 patients. We are a Training Practice and always have GP Registrars on placement. In addition to GP Registrars, we have Medical Students and Student Nurses placed at the Practice as part of their training. The Nursing Team consists of four Nurse Practitioners, five Practice Nurses, two Health Care Assistants, a Diabetes Specialist Nurse and a Training Nursing Associate, so there is plenty of support on hand! We are a friendly bunch and are excited to welcome a new member to our Team.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Phlebotomy

Take and record physiological observation such at Blood pressure and pulse

Undertake long term condition clinic appointment working alongside the GP to monitor patients with hypertension and chronic renal disease

Perform ECGs and act action results appropriately

Carry out diabetes annual checks in preparation for the nursing review – This includes phlebotomy, height, weight and foot checks

Inhaler techniques and supporting patients with low risk Asthma

Carry out simple wound care

Removal of stitches and sutures

Perform spirometry on patients after full training and assessment of competence

Assist GPs in providing minor surgeryCardiovascular Health checks

24 hour BP monitoring

Provide support and encouragement to patients to self manage their conditions as appropriate

Administer intramuscular injections such influenza, shingles and pneumococcal vaccinations as well as vitamin B12 injections following training

Act as a chaperone, when requested.

Record information and activities undertaken with patients and carers in an accurate and timely fashion

Essential

  • General education (eg GCSEs) to grade C or above.

Desirable

  • Open University HCA Diploma or equivalent

Experience

  • Demonstrates self awareness, i.e. strengths and weaknesses, personal qualities and skills.
  • Able to communicate routine information that requires tact and persuasive skills, or where there may be barriers to understanding.
  • Standard keyboard skills
  • Able to organise own time and workload, and cope with occasional last-minute changes
  • Willingness to undergo education/ training for both practice and service needs.
  • Willingness to work towards professional and performance objectives (appraisal)
  • Demonstrates motivation, reliability and commitment to team working and the development of others.
  • Flexibility, commitment and adaptability. Demonstrates an ability to value the opinions of others
  • Fitness to do the job.
  • Ability to work within manual-handing policy
  • Ability to handle simple medical equipment and undertake phlebotomy (dexterity and manipulation skills)
  • Must either be Hepatitis B immune or be willing to undergo an immunisation course.
  • Concentration required daily, eg phlebotomy clinics
  • Ability to deal with occasional exposure to distressing circumstances or emotional events
  • Ability to cope with occasional exposure to aggressive behaviour
