Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join the Mid Dorset Primary Care Network management team to support new and ongoing projects. The successful applicant will be employed by and based at Cerne Abbas Surgery, working with the nine general practices at scale to successfully implement the requirements of the PCN DES and other primary care initiatives. The post holder will be part of the PCN Management Team, reporting to the PCN Business Manager and PCN Project Manager. Although based at Cerne Abbas, you will at times be required to travel to work across the PCN. There will be occasional evening working and potential for some home working at times.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will have excellent IT, written and verbal communication skills, experience of working on data management, reporting and ideally experience of projects. Experience in General Practice or the wider NHS would be an advantage but is not essential. The successful candidate will be supported to develop and deliver their role. The role is subject to a six-month probationary period. The role is advertised as full time, but part time hours may be available for the right candidate.

About us

Mid Dorset Primary Care Network is a PCN made up of nine GP practices in the Dorchester area of Dorset. The practices have a history of collaborative working and provide care for around 49,000 patients. As we grow, we are looking to recruit a full time PCN Support Officer, working over 5 days to support the development of our Primary Care Network.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is a key member of the PCN Operational Team whose over-arching goal is to provide high quality administrative and project support to the PCN. They will be required to work under the guidance of the PCN Leadership team as well as use their initiative to maintain the effective delivery of key projects including the provision of information and analysis. This will be achieved through the effective use of information, data, knowledge and technology systems to inform and support PCN agreed initiatives and meet the needs of the local population. The job holder will carry out any other duties as may reasonably be required by their line manager.   • Significant administrative experience including initiating and maintaining office systems.
  • Significant skills and knowledge of Microsoft IT systems and other software programmes.
  • Understanding of Confidentiality and Data Protection.


  • Demonstrable experience in dealing with people, and sensitive and confidential information.
  • NHS experience, preferably in primary care.
  • Knowledge of NHS structures, primary care contractual and commissioning processes.



  • Educated to NVQ 3 level or equivalent in a relevant subject with significant equivalent previous proven experience.


  • Project management qualification or project experience, preferably in a healthcare environment.



  • Clear communicator with excellent writing, data entry and presentation skills: capable of constructing and delivering clear information/ instructions. High level of interpersonal and communication skills, assertiveness and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a busy working environment and able to multi-task.
  • Effective team worker.
  • Strong technology skills. IT literate and proficient in the advanced use of technology, including Microsoft and other packages.
  • The ability to collate information and carry out data analysis
  • Ability to use initiative, act, make decisions and solve problems independently, and know when to refer upwards.
  • Ability to provide and receive sensitive information in a confidential manner, resolve queries and conflict using tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work under pressure of multiple demands.
  • Can demonstrate insight into learning needs and ability to address them.

  • Ability to engage with external agencies and represent the organisations interests.
