Job summary

Hull Family Practice is looking for a part time (24 hours per week) qualified Pharmacy Technician to join our team of 3 Pharmacists, 1 Pharmacy Technician and 2 Pharmacy Administrators.

The successful pharmacy technician candidate will play an important role in complementing our clinical pharmacists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

It is a requirement of the role to be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Pharmacy Technician. We are seeking a pharmacy technician preferably with previous experience of working in primary care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Support the Clinical Pharmacists in the delivery of clinical pharmacy services
  • Perform medicines improvement work to maximise safe, cost-effective best practice in prescribing under the supervision of the GP or Clinical Pharmacist
  • Assist with medication safety monitoring systems (e.g. high-risk drugs)
  • Liaise with clinicians and administrative staff to resolve medicine-related queries
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide care to our patients within care homes
  • Monitor practice prescribing and adherence to practice, local and national prescribing policies
  • Improve service and quality through mechanisms such as audits

We are a large friendly training practice serving 38,000 patients within the East Hull area. We have teams of GP Partners, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technician, Physiotherapist, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants and a large team of administration staff including receptionists.

Job responsibilities

Main responsibilities:

  • To support the pharmacists and pharmacy administrators involved in the preparation of repeat prescriptions and to participate in the daily preparation of repeat prescriptions in order to ensure high quality, safe and timely repeat prescribing

  • Understand the science of pharmacy, basic pharmacological principles, actions and use of drugs

  • To support the pharmacists with medicines reconciliation in accordance with practice protocols and to update patients medical records / prescribing accordingly

  • To support the achievement of the practices prescribing Quality and Outcomes Framework targets

  • To contribute to the review and development of repeat prescribing protocols /Standard Operating Procedures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of repeat prescribing systems

  • To provide advice to GPs, staff and patients in changes to prescribing in order to support the improvement of prescribing safety, quality and cost effectiveness

  • To participate in medication audits

  • To assist in the appropriate monitoring and management of prescribing the budgets and to liaise with the medicines management team when required

  • To prepare evidence based resources and information to support the implementation of rational cost-effective prescribing

  • To support the Practice Based Pharmacist and Dispensary team to provide medication reviews, patient information leaflets, medicine awareness

  • To take a proactive approach to the safe handling of prescriptions, including assessment of risk and making recommendations for improvement

  • To respond to medication queries from patients and staff in a professional manner referring to the appropriate GP in accordance with practice protocols

  • To advise on the sourcing and safe management of medicines as appropriate

  • To help plan, develop and support the introduction of new working processes within the practice to optimise the quality of prescribing

  • To carry out tasks effectively, in an organized manner, with proper attention to detail and at a pace appropriate to the level of business. Prioritising and completing tasks within agreed deadlines.

Communication:

All contact with external parties should be recorded - accuracy is paramount.
