Job summary
The post-holder will undertake tasks and duties delegated by
the Practice Manager, Nurse Manager or GP following policy and procedures. The post-holder will
support and assist the clinicians in the provision of patient care. You must
work at all times within your own competence and use your own judgement, knowledge,
and common sense in your day to day activities.
The General Practice Assistant will support GPs and other
clinicians in the smooth running of clinics by performing both routine
administrative and clinical tasks. The duties and responsibilities of the
General Practice Assistant may include any or all the items in the following
list. Duties may be varied from time-to-time dependent on current and evolving
workload and staffing levels.
Main duties of the job
- Preparing patients prior to going into see
GP/clinicians, taking a brief history and baseline clinical readings.
- Undertake, measure, process and record: Blood pressure
and pulse, Height and weight body mass index, Urine testing, Measurement of
blood glucose, ECGs, Phlebotomy (blood samples), Prepare specimens for
investigation, Peak flow measurement, Spirometry.
- Support the recall system for Long Term Condition
reviews and work with other healthcare professionals to monitor long-term
conditions.
- Completing basic (non-opinion) forms for GPs to approve and sign.
- Arrange appointments, referrals, tests and follow up of
patients on behalf of the clinician.
- Support the GP with liaising with external agencies.
- Perform other clinical tasks as trained and agreed to
meet the needs of the Practice.
- Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before,
during and after patient care interventions according to Infection Control
guidelines and monitoring.
- Assist with the maintenance and control stock levels of
clinical equipment and supplies of stocks.
- Support QOF (Quality and Outcomes Framework).
- Support clinicians with administrative tasks, input in to
the clinical computer system and assisting the clinician in a variety of
clinics.
- Sort clinical post and prioritise for the GP. Extract
information from clinical letters.
- Maintain accurate and complete records.
