Job summary

Hanham Health is seeking compassionate registered general nurses to work in partnership with Developing Health & Independence (DHI) to support opiate substitute treatment and alcohol and opiate detoxifications, as well as a range of clinical interventions and treatments, to complex substance users in the South Gloucestershire area. Working alongside GPs and Drug Recovery Workers, the post holder will play an integral part in bringing clinical guidance and education to patients and colleagues within the service and across the wider county.

We are looking for non-medical prescribers (NMPs) as well as registered general nurses keen to develop their skills and undertake further training, including PACR, PADRAP and NMP.

Salary shown is indicative negotiation of final salary will be made depending on experience, qualification, and competency. NHS Pension Scheme offered.

Hours are available on a part-time, full-time, and bank basis.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Substance Misuse Nurse, you will be involved with supporting opiate substitute treatment, alcohol and opiate detoxifications and promoting the uptake of naloxone. You will also provide Blood Borne Virus screening and vaccinations and will work closely with mental health, physical health, and social care services.

You'll also help to create a collaborative approach that links the community drug and alcohol service ever closer to outside professionals and agencies.

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST

- Delivery of high quality, safe and effective substance misuse interventions clinical procedures in line with level of training and competence (e.g. ECGs, venepuncture, fibro scans, BBV testing and vaccinations, Pabrinex injections).

- Working collaboratively with the DHI team to assess referrals and identify complex patients requiring clinical input.

- Supporting/managing a caseload of complex patients, including pregnant women.

- Undertaking comprehensive assessments of substance misuse needs and development of clinical care plans.

- Conducting assessments of physical dependency using a symptomatic withdrawal scale, using results to determine safe induction to opiate substitute treatments as required.

- Delivery of specific clinical procedures and tasks.

- Prescribing and administrating medication safely in accordance with own area of competence; OR administrating medication safely in line with PGD.

- Contributing to the safe and effective storage and administration of drugs, exercising responsibility for the custody and maintenance of statutory records of such drugs in accordance with the Practices policies/procedures on the supply and carriage of drugs in the community.

- Ensuring the safe management of medically assisted community alcohol detoxes in line with policy.

- Ensuring service users receive high quality harm reduction interventions (e.g. naloxone, BBV testing).

- Counselling patients about their substance use and related behaviours, using motivational interviewing, relapse management and other evidence-based interventions.

- Targeting clinical and harm reduction interventions to support in the achievement of clinical key performance indicators.

- Undertaking dry blood spot testing and urinalysis when required.

- Screening patients at risk of, or affected by, blood borne diseases.

- Providing pre and post-test discussion to patients screened for blood borne viruses in accordance with relevant guidelines.

- Providing education and assertively promoting Hepatitis B vaccination for patients who are at risk of contracting the virus.

- Administering vaccinations when required, in accordance with Practice policy and procedure.

- Actively promoting attendance at the hepatology clinic for patients affected by liver disease.

- Training and supporting colleagues to deliver health education and promotion to patients in areas including smoking cessation.

- Ensuring clinical checks (including housekeeping checks) are completed in line with policy.

- Supporting with clinical audit activities within the service.

- Supporting the development and effective use of physical health pathways.

- Retaining all required competencies and revalidation.

- Supporting the training and continuous professional development of colleagues within the service.

- Effective and timely communication with colleagues within the service and with partner agencies.

- Ensuring a high standard of case notes and that all paperwork and recording is undertaken in accordance with policy and procedure.
